Wine Description for „La Coma d’en Romeu“ Velles Vinyes 2021 by Familia Nin Ortiz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous ruby red with garnet reflections, medium intensity. In the glass, it displays remarkable clarity, reflecting the care taken in the vineyard.
Nose
Expressive and multi-layered: ripe red cherries and raspberries mingle with Mediterranean herbs – thyme and rosemary. Beneath these, mineralic notes of slate and graphite, typical of Priorat. Subtle hints of lavender and garrigue lend the wine a Provençal elegance.
Palate
Medium to full body with silky texture. Red fruit dominates the palate, accompanied by vibrant acidity that ensures freshness and vitality. Fine-grained tannins structure the wine without dominating. The mineralic component of the Llicorella slate soil runs through the entire flavour profile, imparting a saline spice. Despite 14% alcohol, the wine is remarkably elegant and well-balanced.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering cherry notes and fine herbal spice. The minerality fades gradually, leaving a juicy, appetising impression.
Terroir & Origin
The old vines („Velles Vinyes“) are rooted in the characteristic Llicorella slate soil of Priorat. The extreme steep slopes of the Mas den Caçador and Finca Planetes parcels can only be worked with mules – a tribute to authenticity that pays dividends in the glass.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Grenache from old vines. Star oenologist Ester Nin, who proved her mastery at Clos i Terasses (Clos Erasmus), vinifies according to biodynamic principles. Minimal intervention, maximum respect for vine and terroir.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs, wild boar stew, grilled duck breast with cherry sauce, Catalan butifarra, ratatouille or aged Manchego.
Special Features
An authentic Priorat Grenache that prioritises elegance over power. Familia Nin Ortiz has consistently received top ratings from international critics since their debut vintage in 2003 – this wine impressively demonstrates why.
