Wine Description for Gran Callejo Gran Reserva 2018 1500ml Magnum by Felix Callejo

Character
Felix Callejo’s Gran Reserva embodies the classical school of Ribera del Duero – a wine of substance and depth, which carries the patience of maturation within it. The magnum bottle not only underscores the festive nature of this wine, but also promises a slower, more harmonious development. With 14.5% alcohol, the concentration of the 2018 vintage is evident, without losing Castilian elegance. This is not a wine for quick effects, but one built around complexity and ageing potential.
Terroir & Origin
Ribera del Duero lies on the Castilian plateau at 800 to 900 metres elevation, where extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night shape the grapes. Felix Callejo manages vineyards in Sotillo de la Ribera, where calcareous clay soils on limestone bedrock provide structure and minerality. The continental climate with hot summers and cold nights enables slow ripening whilst preserving freshness – a combination that gives wines from this region their characteristic balance between power and finesse.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Tempranillo, here often called Tinto Fino, finds its most concentrated expression in Ribera del Duero. As a Gran Reserva, this wine has undergone at least five years of maturation, of which at least two years have been in barrel. Felix Callejo traditionally relies on French and American oak, which gives the wine both structure and spicy complexity. The magnum bottle size favours slower oxidation and thus an even finer integration of fruit, tannin and wood.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this maturity and structure demands correspondingly robust dishes: roasted leg of lamb, braised oxtail or game dishes are ideal companions. Castilian cuisine offers with Lechazo (milk-fed lamb) or Cochinillo (suckling pig) perfect regional pairings. Aged Manchego or Idiazábal cheese also harmonise excellently with the maturity of this Gran Reserva.
