Wine Description for Gran Callejo Gran Reserva 2019 by Felix Callejo
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep cherry red with pomegranate-hued reflections at the rim, indicating five years of maturation. Dense, luminous texture in the glass with pronounced streaks.
- Nose
- Complex, multi-layered bouquet that impressively reflects the extended ageing period. Initially dark cherry fruit and blackberries, followed by tobacco, cedarwood and leather. Subtle vanilla and roasted aromas from French barriques, along with Mediterranean herbs, liquorice and a fine minerality that reveals the altitude of the vineyards.
- Palate
- Powerful yet elegantly structured. The ripe fruit shows concentration without becoming jammy. Silky, perfectly integrated tannins bear witness to the quality of the vintage and patient maturation. Vibrant acidity despite 14.5% alcohol – a credit to the cool altitude at 900 metres. On the mid-palate, plum, clove and dark chocolate unfold. Remarkable balance between power and finesse.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and persistent with fine graphite notes and a hint of espresso. The fruit fades elegantly, accompanied by a subtle freshness that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyards lie at 900 metres altitude in the DO Ribera del Duero – once feared as too cool, today valued as a premium site. The altitude provides cool nights that counteract the sun’s daytime intensity, producing fresh, tension-filled wines with precise aromatics.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Tinto Fino (the local expression of Tempranillo). Two years‘ maturation in French barriques, followed by three years‘ bottle age before release – classic Gran Reserva vinification with patience and craftsmanship.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect companion to lamb leg, beef braised stew, wild boar ragout or aged Manchego. Also an excellent choice with duck breast with fig reduction.
- Special Features
- A prime example of modern Ribera del Duero: powerful yet not overdone, with the freshness and elegance that characterise altitude-grown Tempranillo today. Drinking well now, but with potential for a further 8-10 years.
