Wine Description for Parajes de Callejo 2022 by Felix Callejo
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep blackish-red with luminous violet reflections – a wine that reveals its youthfulness and concentration already in the glass.
- Nose
- Expressive and multi-layered: cherries and blackcurrant meet the tart fruit of sloe. Beneath this weaves a distinct wood spice with Mediterranean herbal notes of rosemary and juniper. Smoky tobacco nuances lend additional complexity to the bouquet. The nose promises density and juicy fullness – a promise the wine delivers on the palate.
- Palate
- Powerful and fresh at once: The pronounced dark fruit is structured by present yet ripe tannins, which are skilfully enveloped by juicy fruitiness. The wine displays remarkable depth without feeling heavy – a balancing act between Castilian power and elegant finesse. The minerality becomes particularly prominent with slight chilling and underscores the modern, accessible character of this Ribera.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with lingering fruit and spice notes. The freshness persists to the end and invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from high-altitude vineyards between 800 and 900 metres in the Ribera del Duero. The extreme day-night temperature fluctuations of the continental Castilian climate preserve freshness and aromatics despite full ripeness – a terroir advantage that Felix Callejo exploits masterfully.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A thoughtfully composed blend of 85% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), 10% Garnacha and 5% Albillo Major. The Garnacha brings juiciness and spice, whilst the rare white grape variety Albillo Major provides additional freshness and elegance – a traditional practice in the Ribera that only a few winemakers still maintain today.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with grilled lamb racks, entrecôte or beef stew. Also an excellent choice with Iberian ham, aged Manchego or chorizo. With vegetarian dishes, it harmonises beautifully with grilled aubergines or mushroom risotto.
- Special Features
- A modern Ribera that respects tradition without seeming old-fashioned. Serve lightly chilled at 16-17°C to emphasise the minerality. Already approachable, but has potential for 5-7 years of cellaring.
