Wine description for Flores de Callejo 2023 1500ml Magnum by Felix Callejo
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep cherry red with subtle violet reflections – a youthful, vibrant presentation that impressively announces the freshness of this young Ribera del Duero.
- Nose
- Charming and floral, the nose opens with dark flowers, followed by an expansive fruit palette of black cherries, raspberries and blackberries. In its youth, a slight reduction is evident, which quickly dissipates with air, making way for chocolate and above all liquorice. A fine herbal spice of rosemary runs through the aromatic play and lends the wine Mediterranean flair.
- Palate
- Surprisingly cool and subtle on the attack, then gripping with meaty texture. The tannin provides structure without dominating, the acidity remains consistently invigorating and carries the fruit with verve. A wine that unites many fine attributes: cleanliness, straightforwardness and yet depth. As it develops, the fruit elegantly yields to spice – liquorice, rosemary and juniper take command.
- Finish
- Long-lasting with spicy notes of liquorice and rosemary that cling persistently and pleasantly to the palate. The acidity provides freshness right through to the end.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from various parcels in the elevated sites of Ribera del Duero between 830 and 850 metres. The soils of sand and clay lend the wine its cool elegance and typical minerality; the young vines paint an uncomplicated yet authentic picture of the region.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), fermented and aged for five months in both stainless steel and 500-litre oak barrels – a clever combination that preserves freshness whilst integrating subtle oak notes.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Perfect with grilled lamb cutlets, entrecôte, chorizo, Manchego or mushroom risotto. The spice also harmonises beautifully with rosemary potatoes and Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises not only impressive appearance but also slower, more harmonious maturation. An accessible, honest Ribera del Duero that prioritises drinking pleasure over complexity – and therein lies its charm.
