Wine Description for Viñas de Gain Tinto 2021 1500ml Magnum by Artadi
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with a youthfully-violet rim that underscores the freshness of the 2021 vintage. In magnum format, the wine displays itself with particular brilliance.
- Nose
- Initially austere and reserved, yet of striking intensity and Atlantic freshness. A pronounced minerality dominates the bouquet – typical of Basque Rioja. With air contact, dark cherries, blackberries and red fruits unfold. Subtle spice notes from oak ageing complement the aromatic profile. Decanting is essential!
- Palate
- Forceful and grippy on the attack, yet elegant and juicy – never opulent or jammy. The concentration is remarkable: dense structure, medium body, chalky tannins and a pointed acidity maintain the wine in perfect balance. Aromatically dominated by dark fruits, which reveals the cooler high-altitude sites of Alavesa. An earthy minerality provides depth and complexity.
- Finish
- Long and tension-filled with present yet ripe tannins. The chalky texture and mineral freshness remain sustainably present – a finish with grip and precision.
- Terroir & Origin
- A fascinating cross-section through the terroirs of Basque Rioja Alavesa. The grapes hail from vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar between 450 and 700 metres altitude. Warm sites in the Ebro valley meet cool hillside locations of the Sierra Cantabria. Limestone, clay and stony soils merge into a multifaceted terroir expression.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Tempranillo from organically certified vineyards. 12 months maturation in oak barrels, which lend the wine structure without masking the fruit. Artadi has practised organic viticulture since the 1980s, and increasingly biodynamic winemaking.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Perfect with venison loin, lamb rack, grilled ribeye or braised oxtail. Also an excellent choice with aged Manchego or Idiazábal cheese.
- Special Features
- Artadi left the Rioja association in 2015 – out of conviction for terroir authenticity rather than appellation marketing. The Viñas de Gain embodies this philosophy exemplarily. The magnum format promises optimal ageing conditions. A top wine with fabulous value for pleasure.
