Information about the wine
Fascinating Olivier Humbrecht
The illustrated stallion was elevated to Grand Cru status in the unctuous November cold of 1982. An impressive tribute to its majestic home, the steep, southeast-facing slope near the pretty village of Wintzenheim, not far from the picturesque town of Colmar. Its red soil, dating from the Oligocene period, reveals calcareous sandstone and pebbles and is rich in iron. The soil offers amazing resistance to drought thanks to its shallow depth and existing clay. Even today, the prevalence of Gewürztraminer is dominant in the Hengst vineyards. The favourable combination of early ripening weather and the high concentration of lime and iron promotes considerable phenolic ripeness, which is crucial for this grape variety. No wonder this vineyard has become famous for its red wines!
Production information
This characterful Gewürztraminer comes from two age-worthy vineyards in the heart of the striking Grand Cru. 2020 was a year full of sunshine and warmth, which was reflected in the harvest maturity of the grapes. The Stallion fermented briskly and powerfully - much like its namesake cousin. His powerful style is perfect for this vineyard.
Color
A dense and luminous golden yellow that takes your breath away.
Nose
The gladly demonstrating stallion Gewürztraminer of 2020 explodes with its dominant presence and catches you immediately. The bouquet radiates a compact minerality paired with an incomparable expressiveness. Striking notes of rose oil, bergamot, cedar wood, light tobacco, cinnamon and wood smoke mingle with refreshing hints of salty nougat, orange peel, fig and date give a true firework of the senses.
Palate
The impulsive power of this Gewürztraminer is like a loose thoroughbred on the run. The salt-mineral structure is unavoidably present, underlined by a touch of sweetness, finely honed tannins and an indescribably invigorating acidity. You can't help but fall in love with such a complex, punchy and beautiful wine. The favortity of this grape variety to complex dishes is remarkable. However, the wine also argues for holding back and putting a few bottles aside for a true sensory festival when tasted later in a few years. This wine will benefit from decanting and a generous glass shape when opened now, and over days the wine will only gain in character.
