Info about the wine
This wine is produced from two very old vineyards located in the middle of the Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim. This red marl-limestone vineyard certainly has the potential to produce diverse grapes, but Gewürztraminer is a difficult and demanding grape variety. It becomes a wine in this vineyard that can overcome its rich varietal intensity while gaining complexity. The high iron content and the warm, dry microclimate bring structure and beautiful tannin density to the Grand Cru Hengst wines. This grape has little acidity, which is why it needs very ripe skins and a good tannin structure, like most red wines.
Info about the expansion
Gewürztraminer is suffering from the current market situation, as it is traditionally a richer wine that requires special attention when paired with food. Whatever happens, Hengst will always produce some Gewürztraminer at Domaine Zind-Humbrecht! This is such a great terroir and the 2018 is absolute proof.
Color
Dense and brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
It is already unmistakable on the nose The 2018 Gewurztraminer Hengst has immense power and lives from an intense and compact minerality as well as a clear spicy note. Ethereal and fresh notes of fresh ginger, orange peel, lavender oil and even lilac give it a special touch. Open it a day in advance and aromas of cardamom, cumin, gingerbread spice, leather, wood smoke, light tobacco and forest honey flood the nose. Fruity aromas of apricot, grapefruit and banana are also apparent and will become more precise with further maturation.
Palate
This very classic Gewürztraminer presents itself on the tongue as expected powerfully, with a proudly swelling chest and virtually discharges with a mixture of sweet honey and spices. At the same time, it fascinates with incredible freshness, its acidity is almost spectacularly precise and fresh and its minerality shows itself profound and complex, which leads to a wonderful drinking flow. A splendid specimen, simply beautiful, but actually not yet meant for immediate enjoyment. One should put some bottles in the cellar, because in a few years one can burn off a true firework of flavours with him.
