Wine Description for Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2020 by Château de Pibarnon

Colour & Appearance
Intense purple-red with luminous violet reflections – a wine that already displays its youth and vitality in the glass.
Nose
Ethereal and seductive in equal measure: lavender, roses and mint meet juniper and Provençal garrigue. Beneath lies a dense fruit layer of ripe cherries, plums and blackberries, accented by elderberries and blood oranges. A hint of vanilla rounds off the bouquet – interpreted in a modern style, yet with clear Bandol identity.
Palate
After adequate aeration, a true charmer unfolds here: black cherry and crisp plum merge with liquorice, cinnamon and vanilla. Nuances of tonka bean, violet and black pepper lend complexity. The distinctive acidity structure and present yet ripe tannin give the wine backbone, whilst a cool, fresh vein provides balance. Elegant and robust in equal measure.
Finish
Persistent and precise with beautiful length, allowing fruit and spice to harmoniously fade.
Terroir & Origin
The vines thrive in a natural amphitheatre at 250 metres elevation with a south-facing aspect towards the sea. Soils of clay, limestone and chalk from the Triassic period lend the wine its mineral tension and freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A cuvée of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache (not Cinsault, as sometimes stated). Only the finest, oldest vines are used, with yields at a modest 30 hl/ha. After three weeks of fermentation, the wines age parcel by parcel for 20 months in barriques, tonneaux and fuders of varying origin – a thoughtful maturation that creates complexity without oak dominance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with rib eye medium rare with rosemary butter, lamb rack from the grill with thyme and rosemary or also with an aromatic wild mushroom ragout.
Special Characteristics
A Vin de Garde that is already accessible when young, yet certainly possesses the potential for a further 10-15 years of development. The combination of modern elegance and classic Bandol structure makes this wine particularly special.
