Wine Description for Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2018 by Château de Pibarnon

Colour & Appearance
Dense purple with violet reflections – a wine that already reveals its concentration and youthfulness in the glass.
Nose
Here we see the full class of a great Bandol. Sour cherry, blackberry and cassis meet the balsamic spice of juniper and rosemary. Added to this are cooling notes of tar, liquorice and graphite, underpinned by dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Despite this intensity, the wine comes across as remarkably delicate and elegant – a paradox that only the finest Mourvèdre wines can master.
Palate
Juicy, cool and with impressive finesse. The wine is taut and lean, yet shows a wonderfully natural drinking flow. The graphite note lends it a linear, cooling structure that effortlessly integrates the 14.5% alcohol. The balance between Mediterranean warmth and cool precision is exemplary – exactly what one expects from a first-class Bandol.
Finish
Long, subtle and racy. The fruit remains present but is elegantly carried by the mineral structure. A finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
Château de Pibarnon lies on the hillside slopes of the Bandol appellation with direct views of the Mediterranean. The limestone soils combined with proximity to the sea give these wines their characteristic coolness and minerality – a perfect terroir for Mourvèdre.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Dominated by Mourvèdre, complemented by Cinsault. The grape variety shows its full expressiveness here: powerful, yet never heavy, spicy, yet always elegant.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Lamb shank ragout with turnips and tomato, sour veal tongue with lentil-sherry vinaigrette or roasted aubergine with curry yoghurt, pomegranate and almond – the wine harmonises equally well with robust meat dishes and spicy vegetarian compositions.
Special Features
The 2018 Pibarnon is simply a safe bet. A Bandol that proves that Mourvèdre, in the right hands, belongs among France’s great grape varieties – with depth, elegance and impressive ageing potential.
