Wine Description for Le Grand Rouge de Revelette IGP 2020 by Revelette
- Colour & Appearance
- An intense purple-red with violet reflections – dense, impenetrable, suffused with youthful power.
- Nose
- The nose is fleshy and dark-fruited: blackberry, blueberry and ripe cherry combine with a seductive hint of violet flowers and fresh mint. In the background lurks a suggestion of olive tapenade – an unmistakable nod to Provence.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine reveals its serious side: firm, structured tannins, a bitter-mineral herbal vein and fruit that recalls sloe berries rather than soft berry jam. The olive tapenade continues, accompanied by a cool stony spice. This wine is still closed – decanting and patience are not optional but essential. With air, it opens and reveals a sweet fruit core of considerable depth.
- Finish
- Long, dry and marked by austere elegance. The tannins carry the finish with conviction – a wine that demands time and deserves it.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from 30 hectares of vineyards across 17 parcels around Jouques, approximately 30 kilometres north of Aix-en-Provence. The estate lies sheltered by the majestic Montagne Sainte-Victoire – that limestone massif immortalised by Cézanne. The terroir imparts mineral rigour and Provençal herbal spice to the wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A complex cuvée of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 10% Carignan and 6% Pinot Noir. Fermentation lasted approximately 30 days – a sign of thorough extraction. Maturation took place over twelve months in one- to four-year-old barriques plus 10% in larger casks: carefully handled, without oak dominance, focused on structure and terroir.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Classic and convincing: lamb leg with olives and Provençal herbs is the ideal match. Equally harmonious: Sou Fassum – stuffed cabbage with bratwurst and smoked bacon. For an unexpected contrast, try Qorme Bamia, okra in aromatic turmeric-tomato sauce.
- Special Characteristics
- A wine that has not yet had its final say. Those opening it today should decant generously. Those who wait – two to four years – will be rewarded with a matured, charming southern French wine that never denies its origins.
