Wine Description for Barbaresco Starderi DOCG 2023 by Olek Bondonio

Character
Olek Bondonio belongs to that new generation of Piedmontese winemakers who approach the Nebbiolo grape with respect for tradition and at the same time with a fresh perspective. The Barbaresco Starderi from the 2023 vintage embodies the elegance and finesse for which this DOCG appellation is renowned – less powerful than Barolo, but with an intoxicating aromatic complexity and silky texture. At 13.5% alcohol, the wine shows pleasingly restrained character, which is likely due to the moderate vintage and lends the wine a vibrant freshness.
Terroir & Origin
The Starderi vineyard site ranks among the characterful individual sites of Barbaresco, that small yet prestigious region in the Langhe hills. The calcareous marl soils and ideal south-facing exposure create optimal conditions for Nebbiolo, which develops its typical mineral precision here. The microclimate of the Tanaro Valley with its temperature variations between day and night promotes the development of complex aromas whilst preserving the acidity structure – essential for the longevity of these wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo, the capricious diva among Italy’s grape varieties, demands the winemaker’s utmost attention. Bondonio likely follows tradition with extended maceration periods and ageing in larger wooden casks to tame the tannins without masking the variety’s characteristic structure and aromatics. The young 2023 vintage already promises that distinctive fragrance of roses, red cherries and spices that makes Barbaresco so unmistakable, but like all great Nebbiolos will benefit from further bottle age.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Barbaresco calls for Piedmontese cuisine: tajarin with truffle, brasato al Barolo, vitello tonnato or a mature Castelmagno. The silky tannin structure harmonises wonderfully with game, such as venison loin or pheasant. Also an ideal companion to mushroom dishes with porcini or to braised rabbit.
