Wine Description for Barolo Via Nuova DOCG 2020 by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Dark cherry red with violet reflections and rusty inclusions – a youthful Barolo that already reveals its provenance visually.
- Nose
- An aromatic celebration of the dark side: lilac and pansy caress a fruit palette of elderberry, blackcurrant and blackberry. Plum joins the ensemble, whilst cubeb pepper and black pepper provide spicy tension. Dried marjoram, oregano and sage lend subtle herbal spice, rounded off by cedarwood and forest floor with mossy, balsamic notes.
- Palate
- Still youthfully austere tannin structure, yet perfectly balanced by cool minerality and precise acidity. The fruit thereby displays itself fresher and lighter – sour cherry and raspberry bring finesse into play. Silky flowing across the palate, with restrained yet harmoniously integrated spice. The tannin already develops a finer texture after just a few minutes – a wine with great future ahead.
- Finish
- Persistent and elegant with fine tannin structure that slowly transitions into balsamic and spicy notes.
- Terroir & Provenance
- A virtuoso assemblage from seven vineyard sites across 3.7 hectares: Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste in Barolo, Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba, and Gabutti e Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba. Average altitude of 340 metres with various south-southeast exposures create complex layering.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Maturation in French barriques with light toasting and 30% new oak, followed by one year in bottle. The identical methodology for all Chiara Boschis Barolos deliberately prioritises provenance over winemaking technique.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- BBQ duck with salted cherries and savoy cabbage, braised lamb shoulder with roast potatoes and rosemary jus or roasted white cabbage with Béarnaise sauce and crispy kale.
- Special Characteristics
- The challenging 2020 vintage yielded 30-40% less fruit, but concentrated quality. Harvest on 29 September 2020, production of 14,826 bottles and 278 magnums. A Barolo that already brings pleasure now, yet has many years ahead of it.
