Wine Description for Barbaresco Starderi DOCG 2023 1500ml Magnum by Olek Bondonio

Character
Olek Bondonio represents a new generation of Piedmontese winemakers who work with respect for tradition whilst pursuing bold independence. His Barbaresco Starderi from the 2023 vintage showcases the characteristic elegance and finesse of the Nebbiolo grape in its purest form. The bottling in magnum format not only underscores this wine’s ambition, but also promises more harmonious development over the years – magnum bottles are known to age more slowly and evenly.
Terroir & Origin
The Starderi vineyard site is among the esteemed individual sites in the Barbaresco region, that legendary wine zone in Piedmont which, together with Barolo, forms the crown of Italian winemaking. The calcareous marl soils of the Langhe hills impart their characteristic minerality and structure to the wines. The continental climate with warm days and cool nights enables a long, steady ripening of the grapes – essential for developing the complex aromatics for which Barbaresco is renowned.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s most demanding and simultaneously fascinating grape varieties. Late-ripening, thin-skinned and terroir-sensitive, it demands the highest level of winemaking craftsmanship. With a moderate 13.5% alcohol, this Barbaresco displays a pleasing restraint that aligns with the current trend towards more elegant, approachable wines. Bondonio appears to pursue a style that prioritises fruit clarity and finesse over opulent power – an approach that particularly in younger vintages emphasises the variety’s characteristic cherry and rose blossom aromas.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Barbaresco calls for classic Piedmontese cuisine: tajarin with truffle, brasato al Barolo, vitello tonnato or aged Castelmagno cheese. Nebbiolo also displays its full class with game, mushroom dishes and braised beef. The youthful freshness of the 2023 vintage pairs particularly well with veal and lighter braised dishes.
