Wine Description for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2020 from Sottimano

Colour & Appearance
A fairly transparent ruby red that reflects the classic elegance of the grape variety in the glass.
Nose
Extremely sensual and expressive. Ripe sweet cherries and juicy wild strawberries combine with nuances of liquorice, orange zest and raspberries. Ethereal accents of mint, a touch of black tea and toasted notes of mocha add complexity to the aromatic profile.
Palate
An intoxicating interplay of ripe red berry fruit, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity. On the palate, dark cherries, undergrowth, leaf litter and dark chocolate reveal themselves. Despite its 14.5% abv, the wine comes across as remarkably clear and structured – a captivating Barbaresco with considerable drive.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the three-hectare Basarin plot in Neive (Piedmont). The approximately 50-year-old vines take root on one of the winery’s five famous hills, giving the wine its delicate texture.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Single-varietal Nebbiolo. Following harvest with yields of around 40 hl/ha, the grapes are destemmed. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with wild yeasts and a maceration period of up to 60 days on the skins in open stainless steel vats. Maturation takes place unfiltered over 24 months in large, slightly conical botti.
Food Pairings
Excellent with porcini mushroom risotto with beetroot, fine rabbit legs with cherry and fennel barbecue sauce, or surprisingly harmonious with spicy tandoori swordfish steaks.
Special Features
Regarded as the most graceful and accessible of the Sottimano family’s five single-vineyard Barbareschi. Maturation in large wooden casks as well as uncompromising organic farming endow it with unfiltered vitality and an astonishingly early drinkability.
