Wine Description for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2020 by Sottimano

Colour & Appearance
Quite transparent, luminous ruby red with garnet reflections – classic for Nebbiolo and a sign of elegance rather than extraction.
Nose
Subtle, seductive and of captivating purity. Sweet cherries and ripe wild strawberries dominate, underpinned by liquorice, orange zest and raspberries. These are joined by ethereal notes of mint, black tea and a hint of mocha – an aromatic profile of rare finesse and complexity.
Palate
An intoxicating feast for the senses: dark red cherry fruit and berry aromas meld with undergrowth, leaf, mint and black tea. The tannins are silky and refined, the acidity sensual rather than austere. Notes of mocha and dark chocolate round out the picture. Impressively transparent and clear – a Barbaresco that, despite its 14.5% alcohol, never feels heavy, instead impressing with elegant acidity and crystalline precision.
Finish
Long, fruity and carried by fine minerality. The red fruit lingers for some time, accompanied by a hint of orange peel and spicy herbal notes.
Terroir & Origin
The Basarin vineyard site in Neive encompasses three hectares with vines of around 50 years old. Since taking over in 2014, Sottimano has managed the vineyard organically and biodynamically. The low yield of 40 hl/ha guarantees concentration whilst maintaining elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, destemmed and fermented on the skins for up to 60 days. Maturation since 2020 in large, slightly conical botti for 24 months – a decision that gives the wine greater freshness and transparency than the earlier barrique ageing.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Porcini risotto with beetroot, tandoori swordfish steaks or rabbit legs with cherry-fennel barbecue sauce pair perfectly with the silky fruit and spicy notes of this Barbaresco.
Special Features
The most approachable and seductive of Sottimano’s five Barbarescos. Already a pleasure to drink now, it also promises development potential for the next 10-15 years.
