Wine Description for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2020 by Sottimano

Colour & Appearance
Brilliantly transparent ruby red with pomegranate reflections – classic for Nebbiolo, which reveals its elegance already in the glass.
Nose
Seductive and sensual: sweet cherries and ripe wild strawberries dominate, underpinned by liquorice, orange zest and raspberries. These are joined by ethereal notes of mint, black tea and a hint of mocha. The most subtle and most approachable of the Sottimano Barbarescos.
Palate
A feast for the senses: dark red cherry fruit and berries meld with undergrowth, leaf and dark chocolate. The tannin is silky and refined, the acidity carries with elegant pressure. Impressively transparent and clearly structured – a Barbaresco that invites immediate drinking without losing its depth.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering fruit aromas, fine spice and a hint of mocha. The silky texture remains present.
Terroir & Origin
The three-hectare vineyard site Basarin in Neive was acquired by Sottimano in 2014 and immediately converted to organic biodynamic viticulture. The vines, around 50 years old, yield grapes of extraordinary concentration at a modest 40 hl/ha.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, destemmed and fermented on the skins for up to 60 days, with regular punching down of the cap in open stainless steel fermentation vessels. Since the 2020 vintage, the wine matures for 24 months in large, slightly conical botti – an ageing process that gives the wine its silky texture and elegance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Porcini mushroom risotto with beetroot, tandoori swordfish steaks, rabbit legs with cherry-fennel barbecue sauce, braised veal or aged mountain cheese.
Special Features
The most graceful and earliest approachable of the five Sottimano Barbarescos. The combination of organic biodynamic viticulture, old vines and modern ageing creates a wine of captivating elegance – Nebbiolo in its most charming form.
