Wine Description for Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2016 by Sottimano

Character
Andrea Sottimano belongs to the generation of winemakers who have redefined Barbaresco in recent decades – without betraying its traditions. His Riserva from the outstanding 2016 vintage embodies the classic elegance of the Langhe, combining structure with finesse and impressively demonstrating why Nebbiolo ranks among the world’s great grape varieties. The extended maturation of the Riserva – at least four years before release – gives this wine additional complexity and depth.
Terroir & Origin
The commune of Neive, alongside Barbaresco itself, forms the heart of this prestigious appellation. Sottimano’s vineyards lie on the characteristic calcareous marl soils of Piedmont, which give the Nebbiolo grape its typical tension between power and elegance. The 2016 vintage is considered exceptional – a classic, cool year that produced wines with ideal balance, vibrant acidity and great ageing potential. These climatic conditions favour wines of great precision and long development potential.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s most demanding and fascinating grape varieties – late-ripening, rich in tannins and impressively long-lived. Sottimano works with traditional methods that respect the variety: long maceration periods, maturation in large wooden casks and patient waiting. The Riserva classification requires at least four years of ageing, two of which in cask. The result is wines of exceptional structure that develop aromas of red fruits, roses, tar and undergrowth – the classic Nebbiolo notes appreciated by enthusiasts worldwide.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre calls for Piedmontese cuisine: Brasato al Barolo, Tajarin with truffles, Vitello tonnato or aged Castelmagno cheese. It also shows its full class alongside game, braised beef or mushroom dishes. The structure and complexity make it the ideal companion for long, pleasurable evenings.
