Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Riserva 2017 by Vietti

Character
Vietti’s Barolo Riserva 2017 represents the classical Langhe school in its purest form. Released as a Riserva only after five years of maturation, this wine unites the structural power of Nebbiolo with that elegance which has distinguished the Vietti house for generations. The 2017 vintage is regarded in Piedmont as balanced and harmonious, with ideal conditions for slowly ripening grapes – a vintage that places finesse before opulence.
Terroir & Origin
Vietti manages some of the most prestigious individual vineyard sites around Castiglione Falletto and La Morra. The calcareous marl soils of the Langhe impart to the Nebbiolo that mineral tension and structure which define great Barolo. The continental microclimate with warm days and cool nights enables an extended growing season that fosters complexity and aromatic depth. The Vietti family has understood how to interpret this extraordinary terroir since 1919.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo, Piedmont’s capricious diva, demands patience and a delicate touch. Vietti relies on traditional maceration periods and ageing in large oak casks (Botti), which give the wine time without dominating it with wood aromas. The Riserva designation requires a minimum of 62 months maturation, of which 18 months are in wood. This extended bottle ageing before release softens the famous tannins of Nebbiolo and develops those tertiary aromas of tar, rose, truffle and tobacco that make Barolo legendary.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine calls for Piedmontese cuisine in its most substantial form: Brasato al Barolo, Tajarin with white truffle, braised wild ragout or aged Castelmagno cheese. Ossobuco or rosy roasted venison also harmonise beautifully. The structure and acidity of the wine cut through rich, fatty dishes and demand intense flavours.
