Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Riserva 2017 by Vietti

Character
Vietti’s Barolo Riserva 2017 embodies the essence of Piedmont in its most concentrated form: a wine of great structural depth and aristocratic restraint, one that demands patience and rewards it generously. With 14.5% alcohol, it displays the ripeness and fullness of the vintage without sacrificing the characteristic elegance of Nebbiolo. A wine that does not seek to please, but to convince – and it succeeds.
Terroir & Origin
The hills of the Langhe around Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba have shaped Vietti’s Barolos for generations. The 2017 vintage was exceptionally warm and dry in Piedmont – a year that challenged the vines but produced concentrated, low-tannin wines with earlier accessibility than the Piedmontese average. The calcareous Tortonian and Helvetian soils of the region impart their mineral tension and longevity to the wine, even in a climatically demanding year.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo – the „fog grape“ – is one of Italy’s most demanding and characterful grape varieties: thin-skinned, high in tannins, acidic and naturally complex. As a Riserva, this Barolo is subject to an extended minimum ageing period of at least five years, of which 18 months in wood – a legal framework that traditional estates such as Vietti have always filled with artisanal rigour. The house stands for a classical Barolo style: respectful treatment of the terroir, precise vinification and an élevage that brings structure and finesse into harmony.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this stature demands equally worthy partners. Classic and unbeatable: Brasato al Barolo, beef braised in the very same wine, which gently envelops the tannins of Nebbiolo. Equally recommended: Tajarin with white truffle, wild boar salami or a mature Castelmagno cheese. For those with patience, serve it with lamb rack with herb crust – an evening to remember.
