Wine Description for Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 by Sottimano

Character
The Barbaresco Riserva 2008 by Sottimano embodies everything the Langhe stands for: depth, patience and an inimitable connection between man, soil and climate. As a Riserva, this wine carries its extended maturation like a promise – it is not a wine of quick pleasure, but one of lengthy conversation. The vintage 2008, praised in Piedmont as classic and well-balanced, provided the conditions for a Barbaresco of extraordinary structure and elegance.
Terroir & Origin
Sottimano ranks among the quiet greats of the Barbaresco region. The estate manages vineyard sites in Neive, one of the three communes of Barbaresco DOCG, and consistently emphasises the individuality of each cru. The gently rolling hills with their tuffaceous limestone and clay-marl soils impart a characteristic minerality and freshness to the Nebbiolo here – less opulent than Barolo, yet finer and more accessible in its youth, without sacrificing depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo, the great, difficult, uncompromising variety of Piedmont, is experienced here in its noblest expression. Sottimano works with considerable artisanal finesse: traditional vinification, careful maceration periods and ageing in large wooden casks – a philosophy that protects the fruit whilst allowing the tannins time to integrate. As a Riserva, the wine spends at least four years in cellar and bottle before release, which lends it additional complexity and depth.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands a worthy companion at table. Braised beef shoulder or Brasato al Barolo are classic Piedmontese pairings. It also harmonises beautifully with game dishes such as venison haunch or hare ragout. For those who wish to let the wine’s quiet elegance speak for itself, simply serve it with a piece of aged Parmigiano Reggiano – and allow the Barbaresco the final word.
