Wine with prawns – from plancha to curry

Seafood classics, perfectly partnered

Crisp from the grill, spiced the Asian way or raw as ceviche

Prawns are among the most versatile of all seafood: they can be grilled, pan-fried, steamed, tossed in a curry or enjoyed raw as ceviche. Each preparation opens up an entirely different world of wine – from crisp rosé to aromatic Gewürztraminer.

In short — which wine with prawns? From the grill or plancha: crisp whites and rosé. Asian dishes with curry or tempura call for aromatic grapes such as Gewürztraminer, raw ceviche for precise, mineral wines, and pasta or paella with prawns for sparkling wine.

At lebendigeweine.de we have chosen, from more than 150 wines recommended with prawns, the best partners for every style of cooking. The rule of thumb: white wine dominates – but which one depends on the seasoning.

Grilled prawns call for fresh, crisp wines. Asian dishes with ginger and chilli need aromatic partners. And with raw prawns in ceviche? That is where a mineral Champagne or a lean Burgundy shines.

Plancha & grill – crisp whites and rosé

Grilled prawns with white wine – wine pairing

Gambas a la Plancha, king prawns grilled with garlic and lemon – the simplest and perhaps the finest way to cook prawns. The heat of the plancha caramelises the shells while the flesh stays succulent.

This is the moment for wines with freshness and acidity: a classic Sancerre, a mineral Côtes du Rhône Rosé or, for special occasions, a Grand Cru Riesling from Alsace. What matters is acidity that cuts through the salt and the roasted flavours.

Our tip: grill the prawns in their shells – this protects the flesh and adds flavour. Serve the wine well chilled (8-10°C).
Biodynamic
Côtes du Rhône Rosé AOC 2025
Rhône · Rosé

Côtes du Rhône Rosé AOC 2024

A biodynamic rosé with character. Roche-Audran proves that Côtes du Rhône can be far more than a bulk wine. Fresh fruit, herbal notes, crisp acidity – perfect with prawns from the grill.

Flint
Sancerre blanc AOC 2025
Loire · White wine

Sancerre blanc AOC 2024

The classic with seafood. Domaine Vacheron is a biodynamic pioneer in the Loire. A mineral Sauvignon Blanc with citrus and flint – made for grilled prawns.

Grand Cru Hengst
Riesling Hengst Grand Cru 2022
Alsace · White wine

Riesling Hengst Grand Cru 2023

A Grand Cru from the biodynamic pioneer. Hengst is one of the warmest Grands Crus in Alsace – a generous Riesling with texture and depth. For special occasions with prawns.

Asian – aromatic partners for curry & tempura

Prawn tempura with Riesling – wine pairing

Thai prawn curry, tempura, dim sum, prawn gyoza – Asian cooking loves prawns. And it seasons them with everything the spice cupboard has to offer: ginger, lemongrass, coriander, chilli, coconut milk.

Such a wealth of flavours calls for wines that can keep up: Gewürztraminer with its exotic notes, Champagne with its freshness, or a Riesling with residual sugar to soften the heat.

Our tip: with spicy curries the wine can happily carry a little residual sugar – it tempers the heat. Champagne also works beautifully with tempura.
Half bottle
Brut Réserve Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Champagne · Sparkling wine

Brut Réserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru 375ml

Grower Champagne from Chouilly, 100% Chardonnay. The half bottle is ideal for two with tempura or dim sum. Fine bead, brioche, citrus – elegant and affordable.

Lychee & rose
Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire 2022
Alsace · White wine

Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire 2022

The classic with Asian cuisine. Zind-Humbrecht vinifies it dry and mineral – not a perfumed Gewürztraminer but an elegant, spicy one. Lychee, rose, ginger – perfect with Thai curry.

Großes Gewächs
Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022
Rheinhessen · White wine

Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022

A Großes Gewächs from Rheinhessen. “Zellerweg” is one of the finest sites – limestone lends tension and minerality. Complex enough for spicy prawns, elegant enough for a celebratory dinner.

Cold & raw – mineral wines for ceviche & prawn cocktail

Prawn ceviche with Sauvignon Blanc – wine pairing

Prawn ceviche, prawn cocktail, carpaccio – here freshness is everything. Prawns served raw or merely “cooked” in lime juice need wines that underline their purity rather than mask it.

Sparkling wine is the first choice here: Prosecco for a relaxed aperitif, Bourgogne Chardonnay for more elegant occasions, or a Grand Cru Riesling when it turns into a feast. The wine’s acidity mirrors the lime in the ceviche.

Our tip: marinate the ceviche in lime only shortly before serving – 15 minutes at most. The wine should be ice-cold (6-8°C).
Organic Prosecco
Civranetta Prosecco DOC Spumante Brut
Veneto · Sparkling wine

Civranetta Prosecco DOC Spumante Brut

Organic Prosecco from the Fidora family. Crisp and fresh with a fine bead – an easy-going partner for prawn cocktail or as an aperitif before a seafood menu.

Stainless-steel Chardonnay
Athénaïs Bourgogne Chardonnay AOC 2022
Burgundy · White wine

Athénaïs Bourgogne Chardonnay AOC 2022

Burgundian Chardonnay without oak. Château de Béru vinifies in stainless steel – pure fruit, minerality, elegance. The name “Athénaïs” honours the founder. Perfect with prawn ceviche.

Grand Cru Brand
Riesling Brand Grand Cru 2022
Alsace · White wine

Riesling Brand Grand Cru 2022

Brand is one of the sunniest Grands Crus – granite soil brings minerality, the sun brings ripeness. Here Zind-Humbrecht shows Riesling at its most opulent. A feast alongside a fine prawn carpaccio.

Mediterranean – sparkling wine with pasta & paella

Linguine with prawns – wine pairing

Linguine with scampi, prawn risotto, paella – Mediterranean cooking pairs prawns with pasta, rice and aromatic sauces. Garlic, olive oil, tomatoes and fresh herbs play the leading roles.

Sparkling wine is a surprisingly good match here: Cava, Crémant or Champagne cut through the oil and refresh the palate. But a full-bodied still white from Champagne also works superbly.

Our tip: with garlic prawns (gambas al ajillo) sparkling wine works particularly well – the bubbles tame the intense garlic.
Sea-breeze Cava
Mirgin Reserva Brut Nature 2021
Catalonia · Sparkling wine

Mirgin Reserva Brut Nature 2021

Organic Cava from right by the Mediterranean. Alta Alella lies just 15km from Barcelona – the sea breeze shapes the wine. Brut Nature means: no dosage, bone dry. Perfect with prawn paella.

Brut Nature
Cuvée Métisse Noirs & Blancs Brut Nature
Champagne · Sparkling wine

Cuvée “Métisse” Noirs & Blancs Brut Nature

Biodynamic Champagne from the Côte des Bar. “Métisse” means of mixed heritage – here Pinot Noir and Chardonnay meet. Brut Nature, vinous, complex. A Champagne for the table, not just the aperitif.

Rarity
Coteaux Champenois Blanc AOC 2020
Champagne · White wine

Coteaux Champenois Blanc AOC 2020

A still wine from Champagne – a rarity. De Sousa is a biodynamic pioneer in Avize. This Chardonnay shows what Grand Cru terroir can do without bubbles: pure, mineral, complex. With linguine and scampi.

Frequently asked questions

Which wine goes best with prawns?

That depends on how they are prepared: grilled prawns go well with mineral whites such as Sancerre or a fresh rosé. For Asian dishes with curry or ginger we recommend Gewürztraminer or Champagne.

Does red wine go with prawns?

Red wine is rather unusual with prawns, as tannins overwhelm their delicate flesh. The exception: very light, chilled reds can work with boldly spiced prawns – but white wine or rosé is almost always the better choice.

Which wine with garlic prawns?

With gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns) sparkling wine works superbly – the bubbles refresh and tame the intense garlic. Cava, Crémant or Champagne are our recommendations.

Which wine with prawn curry?

With Thai prawn curry we recommend aromatic whites: Gewürztraminer mirrors the exotic flavours, while Riesling with residual sugar cools the heat. Champagne also works surprisingly well with spicy curries.

What is a good inexpensive wine with prawns?

Our best-value tip is the Roche-Audran Côtes du Rhône Rosé – biodynamic, fresh, versatile. For lovers of sparkling wine we recommend the Fidora Prosecco or the Alta Alella Cava.
