Wine Description for Coteaux Champenois Blanc AOC 2020 by De Sousa

Colour & Appearance
Straw yellow with a slightly silken shimmer that underscores the purity and clarity of this still Champagne wine.
Nose
Initially, a subtle reductive note emerges, which mutates with air contact into linseed oil and earthy nuances – a sign of unfiltered authenticity. The aromatics are deliberately cool and restrained: citrus peel, wet river stones, green hazelnuts and a chalky, limestone minerality reminiscent of Champagne’s chalk soils. This nose demands patience and rewards it with precise complexity.
Palate
Here reveals itself the true philosophy of De Sousa: grip rather than opulence, extract rather than richness. The lemon oil dominates with powdery texture, accompanied by fine, dusty tannins and a mineral tension that electrifies the palate. This is the antithesis of modern oak-aged Chardonnays – a study in reduction and precision. With only 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains athletic and focused, every component stripped down to the essentials.
Finish
Long, taut and mineral with lingering citrus notes and a saline freshness that invites the next sip. The chalky tannins leave a dry, almost powdery aftertaste.
Terroir & Origin
De Sousa manages first-class vineyard sites in Champagne, where the legendary chalk soils provide the characteristic minerality. This Coteaux Champenois is the still version of what otherwise sparkles as Champagne – a rare glimpse into pure terroir.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay, apparently aged with little or no oak. The vinification aims for clarity and terroir expression, not for pleasing creaminess.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with roasted sea bass with lemon, crostini with salt lemon or scampi-stuffed corn-fed chicken breast. The wine demands dishes with acidity, salt and finesse – no heavy sauces.
Special Features
A counter-statement against the international Chardonnay style. Those who appreciate clarity and understatement will find here a wine of artisanal integrity.
