Seafood Classics, Perfectly Paired
Crispy grilled, Asian-spiced or raw as ceviche
Prawns are among the most versatile seafood: they can be grilled, fried, steamed, tossed in curry or enjoyed raw as ceviche. Depending on the preparation, entirely different wine worlds open up – from crisp rosé to aromatic Gewürztraminer.
At lebendigeweine.de, we have selected our finest companions for each preparation method from over 150 wines with prawn recommendations. The golden rule: white wine dominates – but which one depends on the seasoning.
Grilled prawns call for fresh, crisp wines. Asian preparations with ginger and chilli need aromatic partners. And with raw prawns in ceviche? That’s where mineral Champagne or a slender Burgundy shines.
Plancha & Grill – Crisp Whites and Rosé
Gambas a la Plancha, grilled king prawns with garlic and lemon – the simplest and perhaps the best way to prepare prawns. The heat of the plancha caramelises the shell, the flesh remains juicy.
Wines with freshness and acidity work well here: a classic Sancerre, a mineral Côtes du Rhône Rosé or – for special occasions – a Grand Cru Riesling from Alsace. The acidity is key, cutting through the salt and roasted aromas.
Côtes du Rhône Rosé AOC 2024
Biodynamic rosé with character. Roche-Audran shows that Côtes du Rhône can do more than mass production. Fresh fruit, herbal notes, crisp acidity – perfect with grilled prawns.
Sancerre blanc AOC 2024
The classic with seafood. Domaine Vacheron is a biodynamic pioneer on the Loire. Mineral Sauvignon Blanc with citrus and flint – made for grilled prawns.
Riesling Hengst Grand Cru 2023
Grand Cru from a biodynamic pioneer. Hengst is one of the warmest Grand Crus in Alsace – opulent Riesling with richness and depth. For special occasions with prawns.
Asian – Aromatic Companions to Curry & Tempura
Thai Curry with Prawns, Tempura, Dim Sum, Prawn Gyoza – Asian cuisine loves prawns. And it seasons them with everything the aromatic repertoire has to offer: ginger, lemongrass, coriander, chilli, coconut milk.
This aromatic diversity calls for wines that can keep pace: Gewürztraminer with its exotic notes, Champagne with its freshness, or a Riesling with residual sweetness that cushions the heat.
Brut Réserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru 375ml
Grower Champagne from Chouilly, 100% Chardonnay. The half bottle is perfect for two people with tempura or dim sum. Fine perlage, brioche, citrus – elegant and affordable.
Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire 2022
The classic with Asian cuisine. Zind-Humbrecht vinifies dry and mineral – not a perfumed Gewürztraminer, but elegant and spicy. Lychee, rose, ginger – perfect with Thai curry.
Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022
Grand Cru from Rheinhessen. The „Zellerweg“ is one of the finest vineyard sites – limestone provides tension and minerality. Complex enough for spicy prawns, elegant enough for a festive meal.
Cold & Raw – Mineral Wines with Ceviche & Cocktail
Prawn Ceviche, Shrimp Cocktail, Carpaccio – here freshness is everything. The raw prawn or one merely „cooked“ in lime juice needs wines that underline its purity, not mask it.
Sparkling wine is the first choice here: Prosecco for the relaxed aperitif, Burgundy Chardonnay for more elegant occasions, or a Grand Cru Riesling when it becomes a festive meal. The wine’s acidity mirrors the lime in the ceviche.
Civranetta Prosecco DOC Spumante Brut
Organic Prosecco from the Fidora family. Crisp, fresh, with fine bubbles – an uncomplicated companion to shrimp cocktail or as an aperitif before a seafood menu.
Athénaïs Bourgogne Chardonnay AOC 2022
Burgundian Chardonnay without oak. Château de Béru vinifies in steel – pure fruit, minerality, elegance. The name „Athénaïs“ honours the founder. Perfect with prawn ceviche.
Riesling Brand Grand Cru 2022
Brand is one of the sunniest Grand Crus – granite soil gives minerality, the sun gives ripeness. Zind-Humbrecht shows Riesling here in its most opulent form. A celebration with noble prawn carpaccio.
Mediterranean – Sparkling Wine with Pasta & Paella
Linguine with Scampi, Prawn Risotto, Paella – Mediterranean cuisine combines prawns with pasta, rice and aromatic sauces. Garlic, olive oil, tomatoes and fresh herbs play the leading roles here.
Sparkling wine is surprisingly fitting here: Cava, Crémant or Champagne cut through the oil and refresh the palate. A full-bodied white wine from Champagne also works brilliantly.
Mirgin Reserva Brut Nature 2021
Organic Cava straight from the Mediterranean. Alta Alella is just 15km from Barcelona – the sea breeze shapes the wine. Brut Nature means: no dosage, bone-dry. Perfect with Paella and Prawns.
Cuvée „Métisse“ Noirs & Blancs Brut Nature
Biodynamic Champagne from the Côte des Bar. „Métisse“ means mixed-race – here Pinot Noir and Chardonnay meet. Brut Nature, vinous, complex. A Champagne for the table, not just the aperitif.
Coteaux Champenois Blanc AOC 2020
Still wine from Champagne – a rarity. De Sousa is a biodynamic pioneer in Avize. This Chardonnay shows what Grand Cru terroir can do without bubbles: pure, mineral, complex. With Linguine and Scampi.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which wine pairs best with prawns?
It depends on the preparation: Grilled prawns pair well with mineral white wines such as Sancerre or a fresh rosé. For Asian preparations with curry or ginger, we recommend Gewürztraminer or Champagne.
Does red wine pair with prawns?
Red wine is rather unusual with prawns. The delicate flesh of the prawn is overpowered by tannins. Exception: Very light, chilled red wines can work with heavily spiced prawns – but white wine or rosé are almost always the better choice.
Which wine with garlic prawns?
With Gambas al Ajillo (garlic prawns), sparkling wine works wonderfully – the bubbles refresh and neutralise the intense garlic. Cava, Crémant or Champagne are our recommendations.
Which wine with prawn curry?
With Thai curry with prawns, we recommend aromatic white wines: Gewürztraminer mirrors the exotic aromas, Riesling with residual sweetness cools the heat. Champagne also works surprisingly well with spicy curry dishes.
What is a good affordable wine with prawns?
Our value-for-money tip is the Roche-Audran Côtes du Rhône Rosé – biodynamic, fresh, versatile. For sparkling wine enthusiasts, we recommend the Fidora Prosecco or the Alta Alella Cava.
