Wine description for Barolo DOCG Monvigliero 2020 by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Bright, luminous cherry red with delicate colouring and a lighter rim – classic for Nebbiolo from this privileged vineyard site.
Nose
Monvigliero reveals itself at its most elegant: perfumed and delicate, a complex aromatic profile unfolds. Juniper, cubeb pepper and black pepper meet beetroot and rosehip – earthy and sweet in equal measure. A fine blend of sour and sweet cherry as well as wild berries merges with coffee, dark chocolate and above all pine bark, undergrowth and damp forest floor. Cedarwood, light tobacco leaves, lovage and rosemary provide intense spice and cool freshness.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: fine-boned, cool and delicate. An enormously fine-grained tannin of rare perfection lines the mouth – in texture rather Burgundian than Piedmontese. The gripping acidity stretches the wine seemingly endlessly. The fruit presents itself openly and earthy, the red fruits rather as tea infusion, complemented by beetroot in lighter hue. The spice integrates subtly, yet remains essential for the cool elegance. A contemporary, modern interpretation of a great terroir wine – never loud, always precise.
Finish
Of remarkable length, carried by the fine acidity and silky tannin. The aftertaste remains cool, elegant and full of finesse.
Terroir & Origin
The MGA vineyard site Monvigliero is historically regarded as the most important cru of Verduno in the northern Barolo appellation. At 240 metres elevation, on clayey limestone marl, south/south-west facing. The vines average 65 years old – one of the finest vineyard sites in all of Barolo.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, harvest on 30 September. Traditional vinification with 60% whole bunches, cold maceration, approximately 20 days fermentation in steel tanks. Maturation for nearly 24 months in large oak casks and barriques. Bottled without filtration.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Beetroot carpaccio with goat’s cheese cream, venison ham with mixed leaf salad, beef onglet with white bean cassoulet.
Special Features
A prime example of the new generation of Piedmontese wines: cool, precise, terroir-focused. Vietti’s Monvigliero 2020 combines traditional vinification with modern elegance.
