Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Cerequio 2020 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Brilliant cherry red with delicate violet reflections and a lighter rim – a classic appearance for Nebbiolo from this vintage, promising elegance and finesse.
- Nose
- A fascinating aromatic composition that begins with floral notes of hibiscus and violet. Beneath this unfolds a dark fruit layer of morello cherry, blackberry and plum. Particularly characteristic are the earthy, vegetal accents of beetroot and celeriac, complemented by undergrowth, pine needles and fine spice notes of pepper and juniper.
- Palate
- Refined and precise – this is how the Cerequio presents itself on the palate. The tannin displays itself in the finest grain and harmonises perfectly with the knife-sharp acidity structure. Silky and velvety at once, yet dense and cool. The earthy and vegetal accents from the nose continue, whilst the acid-driven fruit steadily increases. Everything hovers in elegant harmony, without any single component dominating. A hint of eucalyptus lends the wine an ethereal dimension.
- Finish
- Long, cool and characterised by inner composure. The silky elegance remains until the very end, whilst the ethereal notes with eucalyptus undertones linger.
- Terroir & Origin
- The prestigious MGA vineyard site Cerequio lies in the municipality of Barolo at 320 metres elevation with a south-facing aspect. The typical calcareous marl with a loamy topsoil on approximately one hectare shapes the character of this wine. The vines are 37 years old and are farmed organically.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September. Gentle pressing, one-month maceration in steel tank with continuous punch-down of the cap. Subsequently 30 months‘ ageing in large oak casks and additionally in barriques. Bottled without filtration.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Pan-seared cod with beetroot crème and roasted hazelnuts, grilled lamb cutlets with artichoke hearts and olive-thyme nage or warm bulgur with black olives and mint.
- Special Features
- Vietti is counted among the pioneers of single-vineyard Barolo production and is regularly awarded top ratings by Gambero Rosso, Parker and Galloni. The 2020 vintage showcases the entire collection in extraordinary form – refined, precise and of impressive elegance.
