Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Cerequio 2021 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Light cherry red with medium transparency – typical of Nebbiolo from this vineyard site, elegant and translucent in the glass.
- Nose
- Nuanced and noble, yet still youthfully closed. A slight reduction brings blackcurrant notes that will dissipate over time. Beneath this emerge wild strawberries, plums and cherries, accompanied by mint and pronounced floral accents. A wine that still has much to reveal – one simply needs to give it time.
- Palate
- Here the true nature of Cerequio reveals itself: currently almost devoid of fruit, yet possessed of monumental structure. Firm and taut, with insistent, nervous acidity and a chalky texture threaded through with chewy tannins. The fruit lies hidden beneath this architecture, but depth, power and energy are already palpable. A wine of great tension and precision, one that will fully unfold its greatness only in years to come.
- Finish
- Long and mineral-driven, with persistent tannin structure and a freshness that enlivens the palate. The length points to considerable ageing potential.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the legendary Cerequio vineyard in the municipality of Barolo, one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in the entire appellation. At approximately 320 metres elevation, south-facing, 36-year-old vines thrive in calcareous and clay-rich soils with Sant’Agata marl. This geological composition imparts the wine its characteristic minerality and structure.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September 2021. Following three to four days of cold maceration, a 27-day maceration in stainless steel with 20–25% whole berries took place. Malolactic fermentation occurred in used barriques, with ageing then for 24 months in large wooden casks – classic Barolo élevage, which gives the wine time to develop without being overwhelmed by oak.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Brasato al Barolo, Ossobuco alla milanese, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle risotto or game such as venison loin. A wine for grand occasions and substantial Piedmontese cuisine.
- Special Notes
- This is a Barolo for the patient. The 2021 Cerequio requires at least five to ten years to unfold its full potential. Those drinking it now should decant generously.
