Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Brunate 2020 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with telltale rusty reflections – the classic countenance of a young Nebbiolo that already hints at where the journey is heading.
- Nose
- What unfolds here in the glass is of rare complexity and individuality. Wild strawberry, sweet cherry and redcurrant form the fruity foundation, grounded by a subtle beetroot earthiness. Floral nuances hover above like a veil, barely tangible and all the more captivating for it. Chalky notes – reaching almost to wet chalk – lend the wine a mineral depth with surprisingly maritime character. Salty liquorice, After Eight chocolate and roasted coffee alternate with balsamic impressions; mint, rosemary and sage add Mediterranean accents of considerable precision.
- Palate
- Brunate 2020 is a wine that knows no compromise – and yet never loses elegance. Powerful and juicy at once, it unfolds a texture that captivates the palate. The tannin is of impressive quality: present, structure-giving, but by no means harsh – it opens with every sip, becomes softer, more inviting. The palate’s aromatics mirror the nose with great fidelity and complement it with green, vibrant notes.
- Finish
- Long, forceful and seemingly endless. Brunate simply does not stop. The mineral and spicy notes linger, the tannin nestles in the length and leaves a sense of completeness and grandeur.
- Terroir & Origin
- The MGA vineyard site Brunate in the municipality of La Morra ranks among the historically most significant of the entire Barolo region. At 350 metres elevation, facing south towards the village of Barolo, calcareous marl characterises the subsoil – a geology that unmistakably reflects itself in the glass.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo, from 51-year-old vines trained in Guyot. Harvested on 20 September 2020. Fermentation over approximately three weeks in stainless steel tank with permanent submersion of the cap. Maturation predominantly in large oak casks, supplemented by small barriques. Bottled without filtration. 14.5% vol.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine of this stature demands partners of equal standing: Roasted lamb shoulder with broad beans is the classic answer. Surprisingly harmonious also with grilled red mullet with celeriac purée and red wine jus. For those who prefer the unconventional: Smoked Jerusalem artichoke with Gorgonzola, parsley salad and walnuts – a combination that beautifully brings out the earthy and spicy facets of the wine.
- Special Features
- Vietti’s Brunate 2020 is a Barolo that seduces even now – and yet clearly signals that it has not yet reached its destination. Those who bring patience will be rewarded. Drinking window from 2027–2030, potential well beyond that.
