Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Brunate 2021 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- A pale cherry red with medium transparency – typical for Nebbiolo from the Brunate vineyard site. The colour already reveals the elegance and finesse of this classic Barolo.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly multi-layered: the Brunate 2021 combines power and finesse in a remarkable way. Cool, dark notes of dry wood and spices meet dried herbs and a pronounced chalky-calcareous minerality. In between, playful accents of fresh mint, lovage and red blossoms – an aroma that impressively reflects the special terroir character of the site.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this Barolo reveals itself: fantastic depth and broad shoulders, intense and expressive, yet always cool and fresh. The chalky tannin is perfectly integrated into a kaleidoscope of red berry and dark, fleshy fruit, mint, black tea, pipe tobacco, orange peel, a hint of balsamic and rosemary. The texture is generous and precise at once, dense and polished – a wine of impressive length and intensity.
- Finish
- Long, intense and carried by mineral freshness. The chalky tannins and herbal spice linger sustainably.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the legendary Brunate vineyard site in La Morra, one of the most prestigious vineyards in Barolo. The south-facing slope at 300 to 400 metres altitude is characterised by calcareous and clay-rich marl soils (Sant’Agata marl), which give the wine its characteristic minerality and elegance. The 50-year-old vines on average, trained in the Guyot system, were harvested on 30th September 2021.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, vinified with modern sensitivity for tradition: three to four days of cold maceration, 20-25% whole berries, 22 days of maceration in stainless steel with gentle submersion of the cap. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by ageing for 24 months in large oak – a vinification that keeps fruit, structure and elegance in balance.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- This Barolo demands sophisticated cuisine: Brasato al Barolo, braised ox cheeks, game dishes such as saddle of venison or venison ragout, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or truffle risotto. Also an excellent choice with robust mushroom dishes featuring porcini.
- Special Features
- A Barolo that, despite its youth, already shows impressive complexity and possesses the potential for decades of ageing. The Brunate site is considered one of the finest and most elegant in the entire Barolo region.
