Wine Description for Zetian Vino de la Tierra de Castilla 2020 by Victoria Ordóñez

Colour & Appearance
Deep ruby red with a black core and violet reflections that hint at the youth of this wine. In the glass, the Zetian presents itself with impressive density and concentration.
Nose
Victoria Ordóñez makes no concessions to smooth mainstream taste here. The nose recalls old-style Tempranillo – characterful and uncompromising. Initially, rustic notes of stable and freshly tanned leather emerge, followed by the complex spice aromas of Indian Vadouvan. Only then does the clear cherry fruit unfold, gaining a fascinating depth through dark mulberries. A wine that demands patience and understanding.
Palate
On the palate, the 2020 elegantly oscillates between tradition and modernity – punk meets pop. The spicy character from the nose continues and lends the wine its historical depth, whilst bespoke, contemporary beats provide balance. Fruit meets spice, accompanied by youthfully polished tannins and a fresh interplay of acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. At 13% alcohol, it remains remarkably approachable.
Finish
Medium-length with lingering spice notes and a fine leather texture that underscores its rustic character. The acidity provides a refreshing conclusion.
Terroir & Origin
The ancient Tempranillo vines are rooted in the Montes de Toledo in Castile. These old stocks deliver the concentration and complexity that distinguish this wine. The 2020 vintage is available on the European market for the first time – previously it was destined exclusively for America.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Served well-chilled, the Zetian unfolds its full potential on the grill: lamb kofta, grilled mackerel with dark miso or aubergines stuffed with bulgur and lentils harmonise perfectly with its spicy-fruity profile.
Special Features
Zetian was Victoria Ordóñez’s first brand, named after the first Chinese empress – once a concubine, later elevated to beloved ruler. A fitting name for a wine that goes against the grain whilst charting its own course.
