Wine Description for Maisulan 6 2022 by Maisulan
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, youthful ruby red with cherry-coloured reflections. Clear and transparent in the glass – a visual harbinger of the philosophy of Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre, who prioritise clarity over extraction.
- Nose
- Expressive and remarkably fresh, this young Tempranillo presents itself with red cherries, raspberries and strawberries dominating, accompanied by floral notes of violets. Subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs and a touch of mineral freshness lend the wine complexity without overwhelming its fruit clarity.
- Palate
- On the palate, the full finesse of Rioja Alavesa reveals itself: juicy, vibrant and with remarkably precise fruit. The red berry fruit returns, embedded in a fine texture with silky tannins and vibrant freshness. The wine possesses that characteristic grip which sets it apart from over-extracted modern Riojas – here the terroir speaks, not the winemaking technique. Medium body with elegant structure.
- Finish
- Medium-length and refreshing with lingering cherry notes and a fine mineral tension that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes hail from the municipalities of Elvillar, Viñaspre and Moreda in Rioja Alavesa, where the vines thrive at around 550 metres altitude on clay-limestone soils. This elevation ensures cool nights and preserves the characteristic freshness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Tempranillo, cultivated organically and biodynamically according to the principles of Masanobu Fukuoka. The ageing deliberately eschews concentration – instead, transparency and drinkability take centre stage.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with grilled vegetables, chorizo, pinchos, lamb chops, pasta with tomato sauce or semi-aged Manchego. An ideal companion to uncomplicated Mediterranean cuisine.
- Special Features
- A wine that proves modern Rioja need not be heavy and oak-laden. The self-proclaimed “two mad ones” of Maisulan manage to combine tradition with contemporary lightness – a Tempranillo to enjoy, not to analyse.
