Albillo

Also known as: Albillo Mayor, Albillo Real, Blanco del País

For a long time, Albillo remained in the shadow of Tempranillo, despite the white grape being its parent variety. In Ribera del Duero, it was traditionally added in small quantities to red blends – not by accident, but to provide freshness and subtle spice. Since 2019, the variety may also be bottled as a single varietal, a belated accolade for a grape that never loudly demanded attention.

What distinguishes Albillo is its restraint: white stone fruit, apple, a hint of anise, moderate acidity. No dramatic aromas, no oak as a crutch. At Felix Callejo, it becomes clear that Albillo doesn’t need to be spectacular to be relevant – it is precise, smooth, with a glycerine index that lends the wines a silky texture without appearing heavy.
