Wine Description for Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2018 by Pian Dell’Orino

Colour & Appearance
Luminous ruby red with impressive clarity and brilliance – a visual promise of Sangiovese purity.
Nose
Precisely drawn aromatic interplay of black cherries and blackberries, accentuated by a whisper of cassis. Beneath, mild spice notes of juniper and subtle roasted nuances that reveal the 25-month maturation in large oak casks. Primary fruit dominates, but with subtle complexity.
Palate
Supremely juicy and extract-rich on the attack – here the concentration of the vintage reveals itself. Ripe fruit is carried by invigorating freshness, whilst youthful yet refined tannins draw the structure. Almost meaty texture, the tannins are silky and contour the exuberant fruit with ruby-red polish. At 13.5% vol. perfectly balanced.
Finish
Stimulating and herbaceous with ethereal-fruity persistence. The wine bids farewell with elegance and leaves a clear, juicy impression.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards of Pian dell’Orino and the middle Pian Bassolino between 320 and 500 metres altitude supply the grapes. A fascinating soil diversity – calcareous clay, weathered marl, blue-grey limestone from the Pliocene and flysch soils – lends this Rosso its characteristic multi-layered character. Average vine age: 20 years.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Sangiovese, rigorously sorted multiple times. Spontaneous fermentation with a maximum temperature of 31°C, 15 days fermentation plus 12 days maceration. Maturation over 25 months in 25-hectolitre oak casks – the large vessels preserve fruit clarity and add only subtle spice.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Classically with Pasta alla Norma, surprisingly versatile with fish soup with pan-fried grey mullet, ideal with hare ragout with wide ribbon pasta. The structure also carries more robust vegetable dishes.
Special Features
A Rosso with unbridled drinking appeal that perfectly embodies Pian dell’Orino’s philosophy: terroir expression without masking, fruit clarity without triviality. Considerably more than a „little brother“ to the Brunello.
