Wine Description for Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2019 by Pian Dell’Orino
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense, dark cherry red with luminous bright reflections – a wine that already reveals its substance and concentration in the glass.
- Nose
- A phenomenally spicy opening that recalls winter spice cabinets: juniper, star anise, clove and black pepper merge into an aromatic kaleidoscope. The dark fruit palette ranges from plums and elderberries through blackberries to intense sour cherry. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate and the noble note of cigar box with its cedarwood character lend depth. Rosemary, oregano and pine needles provide an illuminating, ethereal finale.
- Palate
- The first sip reveals remarkable elegance – wrapped in dark silk, smooth and refined. The sour cherry dominates with its racy acidity structure, enlivening every sip. The spice shows itself more balanced and characterful on the palate. The tannin is restrained but always present – a masterpiece of balance. The acidity structure lends the wine its impressive vibrancy.
- Finish
- Long, elegant and of remarkable persistence. The balance between fruit, spice and structure continues and leaves a sustained, racy impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the vineyards Pian dell’Orino and Pian Bassolino at elevations between 360 and 500 metres. The soils – highly calcareous clays, weathered marl and greyish-blue clays – shape the mineral character. The vines, averaging 21 years old, benefit from the elevation and the distinctive soil conditions of Montalcino.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese, double-selected in the vineyard and on sorting tables. Spontaneous fermentation at a maximum of 30°C over 18 days, followed by 15 days of skin contact including malolactic fermentation. The impressive maturation of 32 months in 50hl oak barrels lends this Rosso a complexity that puts many a Brunello in the shade.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Perfect with Wagyu flank steak with pointed cabbage, fettuccine with pumpkin, ricotta and wild boar ragù or braised rabbit leg with tomato, potato and fennel. The spice and acidity structure harmonise beautifully with robust meat dishes and game.
- Special Features
- With 32 months of barrel ageing, this Rosso di Montalcino significantly exceeds the usual standards and displays a complexity that makes it an extraordinary representative of its category. Jan Erbach’s uncompromising work in the vineyard and cellar pays off in every sip.
