Info

In 2019, the Rosso di Montalcino comes from the Pian dell'Orino and Pian Bassolino vineyards, with the latter using mainly the central part. Strongly calcareous clays, decomposed marl and grey-blue clays are most common. The vines stand at 360 - 500 metres above sea level and have an average age of 21 years.

As with the Brunelli, selection takes place in the vineyard and then on sorting tables.

The spontaneous fermentation reached its maximum at 30°C on day 8. The process lasted a total of 18 days. A further 15 days of maceration on the skins followed, during which malolactic fermentation also took place.

The young wine matures for 32 months in 50hl oak barrels.

Nose

The attack is phenomenally spicy and wintry. The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino by Jan Erbach combines many spices and scents that I often prescribe in winter. Juniper shows up alongside star anise, clove and black pepper. Its dark fruit consists of plums, elderberry and blackberry as well as a spreading intensity of sour cherry. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate as well as some cigar box come out wonderfully. This very cedar wood has a spicy yet enlightening effect. Rosemary and oregano as well as pine needles provide a successful ethereal spiciness at the end.

Palate

With the first sip, it bundles into a fine elegant stream. As if wrapped in dark silk, it appears smooth and elegant. The fruit is clearly more intense in its acidity and the sour cherry also makes itself enormously felt on the palate. The spice is more balanced on the palate and gives it a lot of character towards the finish. The tannin is enormously restrained, but always present. Its acid structure makes every sip a racy experience. Everything is in balance and its elegance continues for a long time on the palate and in the finish.
