Wine Description for Côtes du Rhône Villages Visan Rouge Marius „Père Mayeux“ 2019 by Roche-Audran

Colour & Appearance
Rather transparent garnet red, which already visually hints at the elegance and finesse of this Visan.
Nose
A present, rather masculine wine with distinct Syrah notes of olive tapenade and smoked meat, underpinned by dark fruit notes such as blackberries and sloe berries. The Grenache adds its own voice: raspberries, liquorice and cinnamon provide complexity. Powerful, balanced and fully ripe, this Visan presents itself on the nose.
Palate
Juicy and concentrated, the Marius combines the fruit and spice already announced with herbal notes of fermented cardamom, dried herbs and dark tobacco. The tannins are ripe, firm and present, the acidity clear and coolly structured.
Finish
Long, juicy and slightly herbal with lingering freshness and spicy complexity.
Terroir & Origin
The vines, around 60 years old, are rooted in a three-hectare, very dry vineyard in Visan. The soil consists of 60 per cent stone, complemented by clay and limestone – ideal conditions for concentrated, mineral wines. The extremely low yield of just 25 hl/ha speaks to the highest quality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A blend of Grenache and Syrah, spontaneously fermented and aged for twelve months in 50-hectolitre barrels of Tronçais oak. This traditional vinification underscores the authenticity and signature of Vincent Rochette.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with rack of lamb with herb crust, braised beef shin, wild boar terrine, grilled entrecôtes or aged Comté and Pecorino. Also an excellent choice with aubergine gratin and ratatouille.
Special Features
Formerly known as „Le Père Mayeux“, this wine represents the artisanal philosophy of Roche-Audran. The combination of old vines, sparse soils and traditional ageing produces an authentic, characterful Visan with impressive ageing potential.
