Wine Description for Riesling Heimbourg 2018 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Sparkling golden yellow in the glass – a visual promise of maturity and concentration.
Nose
Fascinatingly complex: ripe apple and dried apricots merge with figs and orange zest. Fragrant floral notes and fresh herbs join in. With air contact, a pronounced minerality and fine spice nuances unfold – the chalky Oligocene rock makes itself known.
Palate
Aristocratic and yet vibrant. The vibrating acidity of the 2018 vintage carries the ripe fruit effortlessly, whilst saline notes underscore the mineral origin. The sweet-sour interplay is precisely balanced – round, but never heavy-handed. A Riesling with backbone and finesse.
Finish
Markedly spicy and demanding, with lingering length. The minerality resonates and leaves a saline, fresh impression that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Heimbourg near Turckheim is a mere 9-hectare south-west facing slope overlooking the Münster Valley. The thin soil lies almost directly on the iron-rich chalky rock of the Oligocene – that red rock which gives this Riesling its unmistakable mineral signature. Valley winds keep the grapes healthy, whilst the sun-drenched site demands precise timing at harvest.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, planted in the mid-1990s. The 2018 vintage shows perfect ripeness with excellent acidity structure – Zind-Humbrecht’s precision at harvest pays off. A wine that unites freshness and maturity in rare balance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The sweet-sour interplay harmonises brilliantly with crispy pan-fried red mullet with artichoke and orange vegetables, duck with spiced sauce and apricot dumplings or carrot and chia gnocchi with wild herb salad. At current tasting: decant for several hours and serve in large glasses.
Special Features
This wine is still at the beginning of its development. Its true potential will only fully reveal itself in a few years – patience will be rewarded with complexity. An age-worthy wine with considerable development potential, which even now cannot deny its noble origins.
