Wine Description for Riesling Heimbourg 2021 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, pale golden yellow with crystalline clarity – a wine that promises precision and purity from the moment you look at it in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose requires time and air to unfold – decanting is essential. Initially, flint and chalk emerge, almost Burgundian in their mineral austerity. As it opens, grapefruit, orange, ginger and angelica develop. Those with patience will be rewarded with hints of forest floor and truffle – a complexity you don’t always expect from an Alsatian Riesling.
- Palate
- On the palate, a wine of striking clarity and precision reveals itself. Delicate citrus notes float feather-light across the tongue, carried by a multifaceted, vibrant acidity that never feels intrusive. The wine possesses an almost meditative purity – like spring water, yet with considerable depth.
- Finish
- Long, saline, with an impressive umami resonance that enlivens the palate and invites the next sip. A finish that unmistakably underscores the mineral character of the terroir.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Heimbourg sits on a steep slope facing south-west to west, east of Turckheim. The Oligocene marl-limestone-sandstone terroir with a high active limestone content (over 45 %) and iron-rich limestones ensures excellent drainage and allows the Riesling a slow, acid-preserving ripening – the signature of this extraordinary site is unmistakable in the glass.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling, vinified dry with 13.0 % vol. The precise harvest timing is crucial: the site tends towards intense ripeness at late harvest, requiring meticulous work in the vineyard. In 2021, the wine underwent one of the longest fermentations of the vintage – a quiet testament to the seriousness with which Olivier Humbrecht brought this wine to dryness.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The saline minerality and vibrant acidity make this Riesling an ideal companion to fine cuisine: Carpaccio of scallop with coral and grapefruit mirrors the wine’s citrus notes perfectly. Equally convincing: Turbot from the salt crust with Venere risotto. For a vegetarian moment, we recommend heritage carrots with chopped walnuts and honey-wild raspberry marinade.
- Special Notes
- This wine demands decanting – at least a day before service. In the glass, please do not serve too cold and choose generous Burgundy glasses that give the wine the space it deserves. Those with patience will be rewarded with a Riesling that elegantly redefines the boundaries of its grape variety.
