Wine Description for Riesling Heimbourg 2020 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant golden yellow in the glass – a visual promise of the concentration and maturity that this extraordinary Riesling brings.
- Nose
- An aromatic spectrum that immediately reveals the mineral signature of the limestone terroir: grapefruit, mango and orange zest meet angelica, ginger and anise. Added to this are yeasty and smoky notes that lend complexity and depth. With air contact, the first earthy hints develop, pointing towards future truffle notes – a wine that urgently demands decanting.
- Palate
- Powerful yet possessed of aristocratic elegance: this dichotomy is what makes the Heimbourg 2020 so fascinating. Crisp and dry despite its fullness, with precise acidity that forms the backbone. Citrus fruits dominate, underpinned by a saline minerality that makes the limestone terroir unmistakable. The yeasty spice lends additional texture and complexity.
- Finish
- Impressively long and characterised by vibrant freshness. The citrus notes linger, accompanied by that salty minerality that refreshes the palate and immediately calls for another sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Heimbourg near Turckheim is among Alsace’s great vineyard sites: steep slopes with south-west to west-facing exposure on marl-limestone-sandstone from the Oligocene. With over 45% active limestone, high silica content and low clay content, this soil offers perfect drainage and allows the Riesling a slow, physiologically mature development whilst retaining acidity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The 2020 vintage brought ideal conditions: perfect ripeness without botrytis. Intensive, slow fermentation in large old oak barrels, 17 months on lees until bottling. The result: an uncompromisingly dry Riesling of great substance.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Linguine with porcini mushrooms and truffle, lemon risotto with grilled octopus or beef fillet strips with lime, pak choi and peanuts – the wine’s minerality and spice harmonise brilliantly with earthy mushrooms, seafood and Asian-inspired flavours.
- Special Notes
- This wine demands patience: decant at least a day beforehand, serve not too cold, ideally from large Burgundy glasses. A Riesling that will develop considerably over the coming years – cellaring potential of at least 10-15 years.
