Wine Description for R‘ Chardonnay Dry 2023 from Ökonomierat Rebholz

Character
The Ökonomierat Rebholz estate in Siebeldingen ranks among the absolute elite of the Palatinate and has earned a reputation far beyond Germany through its uncompromising quality philosophy. The R‘ Chardonnay represents the entry-level line of the house – though „entry-level“ at Rebholz already means artisanal excellence. The „R'“ stands for Rebholz and marks wines that interpret the terroir of southern Palatinate with Burgundian precision.
Terroir & Origin
Southern Palatinate around Siebeldingen benefits from one of Germany’s warmest microclimates, sheltered by the Pfälzerwald and the Haardt. The bunter sandstone and limestone soils impart mineral structure and elegance to the wines. Rebholz manages its vineyards according to biodynamic principles, which is reflected in the vibrancy and authenticity of the wines. The 2023 vintage was characterised by moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall – ideal conditions for precise, tension-filled Chardonnays.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay has a long tradition in the Palatinate and finds at Rebholz an interpretation that deliberately draws on Burgundian models without copying them. The Rebholz family relies on spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, moderate ageing and restrained oak use. The focus lies on fruit clarity, mineral tension and drinkability. At 13% alcohol, the wine displays balance and elegance rather than overripe opulence – a deliberate stylistic choice for finesse and complexity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to poultry in cream sauce, pan-fried white fish or scallops. The mineral structure harmonises beautifully with goat’s cheese or young Comté. Also an elegant choice with asparagus dishes with butter or mushroom risotto. The wine’s freshness makes it an ideal aperitif or pairing with oysters and seafood.
