Wine Description for Pouilly-Fuissé Climat „En Chatenay“ Zen AOC 2022 1500ml Magnum by La Soufrandière
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a visual promise of freshness and precision.
- Nose
- Seductively complex: pastry with lemon curd and salt-preserved lemons meet green and yellow pears. These are joined by a fine lanolin note, subtle smoky nuances and delicately roasted hazelnuts. The aromatics feel ripe and juicy, yet always with refreshing clarity.
- Palate
- Here reveals the true greatness of this Chardonnay: juicy, bright, vibrant. An agile acidity runs through the wine like an electric impulse, accompanied by herbal-zesty and citrus notes as well as a fine salinity that stimulates the palate. No pretence, no oak mask – just crystal-clear articulated Burgundy fruit in its purest form.
- Finish
- Clear, mineral and persistently fresh with an elegant, citrus-driven aftertaste that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The tiny parcel, just 0.69 hectares, in the Climat En Chatenay sits at 250 metres altitude below the famous Roche de Vergisson, facing north-east. The soil of reddish-brown clay on limestone gives the wine its mineral tension. The Bret brothers share this privileged vineyard site with the legendary Comtes Lafon – that alone speaks volumes.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay from 55-year-old vines. Hand-harvested on 2 September 2022, whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation and 17 months ageing in used barrels and neutral vats. Complete malolactic fermentation, minimally sulphited (only 21 mg/l total sulphur). A masterclass in natural, terroir-driven winemaking.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with grilled oysters with hot sauce butter, langoustines with lemongrass and lime or roasted golden beetroot with pears and pistachios. The saline minerality harmonises beautifully with shellfish.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing conditions. With a pH of 3.17 and minimal sulphur, this wine embodies the Zen philosophy of the Bret brothers: clarity, balance and uncompromising authenticity.
