Wine Description for Pouilly-Fuissé Climat „En Chatenay“ Zen AOC 2021 by La Soufrandière

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity, which already announces the freshness of the 2021 vintage visually.
Nose
A Chardonnay of striking clarity: salted lemons and green pears dominate, underpinned by oyster shells and a hint of gorse. These are joined by a subtle waxy note, dry foliage and freshly peeled hazelnuts and almonds – an aromatic profile that oscillates between Mediterranean freshness and Burgundian finesse.
Palate
Here the true class of this Climat reveals itself: with positively electrifying vibrancy, the wine fills the mouth. Lemons, limes and salt meet chalky, iodine notes, green herbs and lemongrass. The texture is vibrant and mineral, the wine presses itself against the palate – mouth-watering, juicy, with crystal-clear bright aromas of impressive precision.
Finish
Long, remarkably juicy and sustained by persistent mineral tension. The citrus freshness lingers on, without ever becoming intrusive.
Terroir & Origin
The tiny parcel, covering just 0.69 hectares, in the Climat En Chatenay sits at 250 metres altitude below the Roche de Vergisson, facing north-east. The reddish-brown clay on limestone and the 55-year-old vines – neighbours to the Comtes Lafon – lend this wine its characteristic minerality and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 25 September 2021. Whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation, 17 months ageing in used barrels and neutral vats. Complete malolactic fermentation, minimal sulphur use (27 mg/l total sulphur) – a textbook example of natural yet precise winemaking.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Langoustines with young garlic, lemongrass and limes, red mullet with yellow Thai curry and coconut milk or a courgette risotto with almond-lemon persillade – the wine calls for dishes that echo its salty freshness and citrus aromatics.
Special Characteristics
With just 12% alcohol and a pH of 3.16, this Pouilly-Fuissé embodies modern Burgundian philosophy: freshness over power, precision over opulence. A wine that perfectly captures the signature of the Bret brothers and the essence of the cool 2021 vintage.
