Wine Description for Pinot Gris Turckheim 2023 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Pale old gold, radiant and of remarkable clarity – a visual promise of the precision that will follow.
Nose
Textbook clear and focused: rosy apples and bacon-scented pear dominate, flanked by delicate stone fruit, mace and green almonds. This aromatic clarity is hard to surpass – Pinot Gris in its purest, most unadorned form.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: what already shone on the nose becomes tightened and concentrated on the palate into a crystalline play of aromas that is unmatched. Firm, sinewy, taut – with clear, unbroken flow from attack through to the finish. The 5.2 g/l acidity with just 1.2 g/l residual sugar creates a tension that makes the wine vibrate without ever becoming angular.
Finish
Crystalline, precise and lingering. The wine bids farewell with mineral freshness and a purity that resonates.
Terroir & Origin
The 32-year-old vines are rooted in the gravelly alluvial soils of the Fecht in the Herrenweg of Turckheim – a terroir that combines drainage and minerality. The 2023 vintage brought healthy, perfectly ripe grapes without botrytis, harvested as early as the beginning of September – the estate’s first parcel ever.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris in its driest, clearest expression. The early harvest date and rapid fermentation resulted in a wine of 12% alcohol with moderate yields of 57 hl/ha – balance through restraint, precision through timing.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Roasted monkfish with capers, calf’s sweetbreads sautéed in butter, morels in cream sauce, Comté or aged Gruyère. Also an ideal companion to roasted poultry with mushrooms or autumn vegetable risotto.
Special Characteristics
This Pinot Gris embodies what Alsace can achieve and what seems impossible elsewhere: dry precision with full aromatic richness. A wine that demonstrates that greatness need not mean opulence – sometimes it is crystal clear.
