Wine Description for Chardonnay Clos Windsbuhl 2024 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Character
The Chardonnay from the legendary Clos Windsbuhl embodies the Alsatian interpretation of this world-class grape variety in its purest form. Olivier Humbrecht, one of France’s first Masters of Wine, crafts here a wine of crystalline precision and mineral depth that stands distinctly apart from Burgundian or international styles. The moderate residual sweetness underscores the natural fruit concentration, without ever appearing cloying – rather, it contributes to textural fullness.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Windsbuhl lies in Hunawihr on shell limestone soils with a high limestone content at approximately 300 metres elevation. This geological particularity lends the wines their characteristic saline minerality and vibrant acidity structure. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht has managed the parcel for decades using biodynamic methods (Demeter-certified), resulting in extremely low yields and intense aromatic precision. The Alsatian continental climate with warm, dry summers enables optimal ripeness whilst maintaining freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay occupies a special position in Alsace – here the variety displays a taut, straightforward personality rather than creamy opulence. Zind-Humbrecht deliberately eschews barrique ageing and malolactic fermentation to preserve the purity of terroir. Spontaneous fermentation in traditional foudres (large wooden casks) and extended lees ageing create complexity without intrusive oak notes. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. reflects the house philosophy: balance over power, elegance over extraction.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Chardonnay calls for Alsatian cuisine: Coq au Riesling, Quiche Lorraine or moderately aged Munster cheese. It equally harmonises with pan-fried char, scallops in butter or sweetbreads. The mineral structure makes it an ideal companion for oysters and seafood, whilst the subtle residual sweetness also pairs well with lightly spiced Asian dishes.
