Info about the wine
The Rotenberg site is located on a west/northwest exposure and hides behind the Grand Cru Hengst. However, it benefits from a beautiful opening to the Munster Valley and the Vosges. The late ripening vineyard is mostly planted to the Pinot family varieties. The poor red Olizocene limestone, rich in iron, naturally reduces the vitality of the vines and yields are usually very low. This vineyard has historically been known for producing harmonious, rich and sweet wines. However, due to the natural concentration of the grapes, complex dry Pinot Gris wines have also emerged in recent years.
Info about the expansion
Avoiding over-ripening was easier in 2016. And it was easier to carry out the fermentation completely with wild yeasts.
Color
Bright, muted golden yellow.
Nose
The smoky, malty and powerful character of the 2016 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is already noticeable in the nose. Besides aromas of beetroot, boxwood, pepper and roasted walnuts, a fine buttery and vanilla scent emerges from the glass. After a little aeration, it is the fine vineyard peach and acacia blossom notes that truly beguile and stand in beautiful context to its earthy and malty structure.
Palate
Firm, salty and extremely powerful is the attack on the tongue. The mid-palate is expansive and powerful, cushioned by a fine fruit and charming sweetness, which flashes juniper and lavender in the aftertaste. The long finish seems cool and refreshingly herbal. Thus, this wine is in a constant interplay of countless impressions and one can be curious how it will develop over the next few years.
