Wine Description for Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben 2018 1500ml Magnum by Moric
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep red between ruby and garnet with luminous violet reflections – a visual promise of concentration and ageing potential.
- Nose
- Bewitchingly complex: black cherries, elderberries and mulberries meld with wild herbs, a hint of tar and peat. With air contact, a fascinating multi-layered character unfolds – violets, mineral stone notes and increasingly dark berry fruit. This nose is a masterclass in Blaufränkisch elegance.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: dense and generous, yet possessed of striking precision. The tannin is ripe, elegant and perfectly balanced, clothing the palate with velvet without ever dominating. The balance between red and dark berries, earthy notes and minerality is masterful. Despite its fullness, the wine positively dances on the tongue – a paradox of power and finesse. This is Blaufränkisch at world-class level.
- Finish
- Long, multi-layered and sustained by persistent freshness. The fruit lingers, accompanied by fine spice notes and a mineral coolness that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Lutzmannsburg plateau owes its uniqueness to a primordial volcano. The soils combine calcareous sandstone, clay, sand and volcanic deposits – a geological treasure trove that gives the wine its characteristic minerality and complexity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Selection from six parcels with vines aged 85 to 110 years. 20% whole-bunch fermentation, spontaneous fermentation in open wooden vats over 23-28 days. Eleven months on full lees, followed by a further twelve months‘ maturation in 500-litre barrels. Unfiltered, unfined – pure craftsmanship from Roland Velich.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Stuffed quail with blood orange, pheasant terrine with goose liver, alpine cheese dumplings with mushrooms and blackberry reduction, braised beef, game or aged hard cheeses.
- Special Features
- Magnum format (1500ml) for optimal maturation. Already seductive now, but with ageing potential of 20+ years. A wine that rewards patience, yet also brings immediate pleasure.
