Wine description for Maranges 1er Cru rouge La Fussière AOC 2023 by Thomas Morey

Colour & Appearance
A powerful, yet quite transparent purple, which combines the elegance of Pinot Noir with the substance of a warm terroir.
Nose
Directly inviting and beautifully balanced: dark and red berries, raisined fruits and a hint of pepper unite with subtle notes of soy sauce and cinnamon. The subtle oak integrates harmoniously – an aroma that radiates power and warmth without dominating.
Palate
Energetic and juicy. The deep dark raspberry fruit is accompanied by pepper and a distinct, yet pleasant tannin. The wine possesses good density and length – typical for this warm terroir, yet never heavy or overloaded.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site La Fussière encompasses just under 42 hectares in the north-east of Maranges, directly on the border with Santenay. The terroir characteristically produces abundant fruit and pronounced tannin – qualities that Thomas Morey respects through careful extraction.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, largely destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank. Natural malolactic fermentation, approximately 20% new oak. Particularly noteworthy: minimalist sulphiting only in the final six months with multiple micro-doses – total content remains below 35 mg/l.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An uncomplicated, well-made food companion for rare roasted beef fillet, duck breast with cherry sauce, Coq au Vin or aged Comté. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes and hearty terrines.
Special Features
Thomas Morey combines traditional Burgundian vinification with a modern, sustainable approach. The extremely reduced sulphiting and work with indigenous yeasts underline his philosophy of authentic, terroir-driven winemaking.
