Wine Description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru blanc Clos Saint-Jean AOC 2024 by Thomas Morey

Character
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean by Thomas Morey embodies the essence of the Côte de Beaune in its purest form: a dry, precise white wine with the unmistakable depth of a true Premier Cru. Thomas Morey, son of the legendary Bernard Morey and himself one of the most reliable addresses in Chassagne, stands for a style that prioritises elegance over opulence – mineral, disciplined, crafted with meticulous care.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Saint-Jean is one of the largest Premier Cru vineyard sites in Chassagne-Montrachet by area and lies in the southern part of the appellation, where the slope gently descends and the limestone-rich, clay-laden soils impart a characteristic tension to the Chardonnay. The terroir produces wines characterised less by richness than by structural clarity and mineral austerity – typical of the white Premier Crus of Chassagne, which often languish in the shadow of the great Montrachets, yet speak their own serious language. The vintage 2024 proved cool and challenging in Burgundy, which favoured wines with natural freshness and vibrant acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay in Chassagne is no neutral canvas, but rather a medium that translates terroir with remarkable fidelity. Thomas Morey vinifies traditionally: barrel fermentation and maturation in Barrique, with the proportion of new oak deliberately kept moderate to avoid masking the character of origin. The result is a wine that understands oak as a tool, not as an end in itself – with an alcohol content of 13.0% vol., it also demonstrates the restraint befitting both the vintage and the craft.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The combination of minerality, acidity and substance makes this wine an ideal companion to classical cuisine. Recommended pairings include scallops with beurre blanc, turbot from the oven, lobster with tarragon beurre blanc or a simple yet refined Poulet de Bresse à la crème. Aged Comté or Époisses also form a classic Burgundian pairing.
