Wine description for Majuelos de Callejo 2020 by Felix Callejo

Colour & Appearance
Luminous purple-red with youthful violet reflections – a wine that already hints at its origins from cooler high-altitude sites through its visual appearance.
Nose
Impressively multi-layered: plum and mulberry meet rosemary and a cool, almost stony minerality. The nose reveals earthy notes reminiscent of damp earth and graphite. Nothing overwrought; instead, a refreshing clarity that makes you eager for the first sip.
Palate
Here the true class of this Tempranillo reveals itself: full-bodied and tannic-rich, yet with silky texture and impressive balance. Black cherry, cassis and dark berries merge with earthy, mineral components. The tannin is present but finely ground – powerfully elegant, if you will. The 18 months in 500-litre oak have given the wine structure without dominating it. Tense and with excellent drinking flow.
Finish
Long, fresh and with lingering fruit. The mineral coolness remains present through to the end, accompanied by fine spice notes and a hint of liquorice.
Terroir & Origin
From Sotillo de la Ribera, one of the coolest zones in Ribera del Duero. The vines are rooted in barren gravelly soils at 870-890 metres altitude – the continental climate with extreme day-night temperature swings gives this wine its characteristic freshness and tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Tempranillo (locally called Tinto Fino), fermented spontaneously with autochthonous yeasts. Maturation took place for 18 months in 500-litre oak barrels – a deliberate choice for greater elegance compared to the classic Barrique.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Made for grilled beef fillet, lamb rack or duck breast. Also an excellent choice with ratatouille, aged Manchego or wild boar ragout.
Special Features
This wine showcases Ribera del Duero at its finest: power meets finesse, concentration meets freshness. A modern classic that proves altitude and cool microclimate can make all the difference.
