Wine Description for Viña Coqueta Reserva 2017 by Remirez de Ganuza
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense, luminous cherry red with delicate violet reflections – youthful and of remarkable depth.
- Nose
- The nose opens dark and concentrated, yet never heavy-handed. Plum, sweet cherry and morello cherry form the fruity backbone, complemented by blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry. Yet it is the chalky-stony finesse that immediately sets this wine apart from the crowd – cool, precise, unmistakably terroir-driven. To this are added roasted coffee, dark chocolate and liquorice, whilst ethereal notes of eucalyptus, rosemary and juniper as well as cedarwood and cold smoke lend the whole an elegant, cigar-box-like complexity. Remarkably well-balanced – refined rather than opulent.
- Palate
- On the palate, the impression from the nose is confirmed with conviction. A precise, vibrant acidity gives the wine tension and direction. The tannin is supple, fine-grained and perfectly integrated – elegance without compromise. The fruit deliberately takes a step back, leaving spicy, earthy and ethereal components centre stage. Juicy and gripping at once, of great inner coherence.
- Finish
- Long, cool and mineral – stoniness and fresh elegance dominate the aftertaste, whilst the fruit resonates only softly in the background. A finish that proves its class.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Viña Coqueta lies directly below the winery and was planted in 1975 – old vines on cool, chalky soil. First bottled in 2005, this wine has appeared only in exceptional vintages ever since.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Blend of Tempranillo and Graciano. After harvest, the grapes are cold-stored for 24 hours before being meticulously sorted. Fermentation in neutral stainless steel and concrete tanks, maturation for at least 24 months in barrels of French and American oak – precisely dosed, without over-oaking.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with aged lamb loin with herb crust, Ibérico pork roast, wild boar ragout or a robust Manchego. Also an excellent choice with truffle pasta or grilled mushrooms.
- Special Features
- A wine that redefines Rioja: contemporary, elegant, without exaggeration – and yet of extraordinary depth. Remirez de Ganuza ranks among the most consistent quality producers in the entire region.
