Wine Description for Anning Pinot Noir 2019 by Loimer

Colour & Appearance
Brilliant ruby red with vibrant violet reflections – a classic appearance for a young, cool-climate Pinot Noir from Austrian high-altitude vineyards.
Nose
Seductively complex: sour cherries and plums meet lingonberries and dark berries. Floral notes of peony, elderflower and ivy join the composition. The spice palette ranges from bay leaf through liquorice to a refreshing herbal note of wild mint and rosemary – Burgundian elegance meets Austrian freshness.
Palate
Taut, lively and endowed with youthful tension. The acidity structure is precise, the tannins still young but fine-grained and promising development potential. At a moderate 12.5% alcohol, this Pinot Noir displays remarkable elegance and finesse – a wine still in its infancy, yet already hinting at its Burgundian potential.
Finish
Medium to long, with persistent fruit and a refreshing herbal spice that lingers. The tannins remain present without dominating.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards at the foot of the Anninger near Gumpoldskirchen benefit from the Pannonian climate with hot summers and dry autumns. The heavy shell limestone soils with weathered debris lend the wine character and mineral depth – a wine-growing region proven over more than 2,000 years at the easternmost foothills of the Alps.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Noir, hand-harvested on 3rd and 5th September. Spontaneous fermentation with whole bunches including stems in used wooden fermentation vats, followed by 12 months ageing in 300-litre oak barrels and a further 6 months in large casks. Bottled unfiltered in April 2021 – artisanal vinification at the highest level.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Wild boar goulash with butternut squash, roast goose with lingonberries and red cabbage or vegetarian walnut gnocchi with radicchio and figs. Generally ideal with braised dishes featuring fruity and herbal components.
Special Characteristics
This Pinot Noir deserves patience – a few years of bottle age will bring out its Burgundian elegance even more distinctly. The impatient should enjoy it lightly chilled from a decanter and in large Burgundy glasses.
