Background information on wine
South of Vienna, characterised by a Pannonian climate of hot summers and dry autumns, vines have found a suitable home for over 2000 years. Precipitation is followed by rapid drying due to constant air movement, while the grapes gain character and depth from the heavy soils with a high shell limestone content. At the Anninger, a 700 m high mountain at the eastern ends of the Alps and near which the vineyards for this exquisite drop are located, the underlying weathered rubble ensures good drainage and heat dissipation, both of which are advantageous for fully ripe, healthy grapes.
Vinification
After a careful hand harvest in 20 kg crates at the beginning of September, a 100% maceration with the stems followed, as well as a spontaneous fermentation in 2,200 l oak barrels for a fortnight at a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius. The ageing was done in 300 l oak barrels for one year, followed by larger oak barrels for another six months. The wine was bottled unfiltered in April.
Appearance
The eye is delighted by a radiant ruby red, interspersed with violet reflections.
Nose profile
The 2019 Pinot Noir is a charismatic wine that exudes ethereal scents of sour cherries, plums, sweet berries and a floral symphony of peony, ivy and elderberry. These are joined by bay leaf, liquorice and pickled cranberries, paired with refreshing nuances of wild mint and rosemary.
Taste profile
Fruity, pithy, balanced between a youthful acidity and a ripe, yet still fresh tannin structure - a true energy carrier with as yet unexploited Burgundian potential, which only unfolds in its fullness after patience. Ideal in combination with braised dishes and food with fruity and herbal accents.
For best enjoyment, we recommend either maturing for several years or - for the impatient - slightly chilled directly from the carafe and in generous Burgundy glasses.
Alternatives to food recommendations:
