Wine Description for Anning Pinot Noir 2020 by Loimer

Colour & Appearance
Deep cherry red with bright and violet reflections – a Pinot Noir that presents itself visually with considerable confidence.
Nose
A remarkably spicy, wintry Pinot Noir that leaves conventional fruit expectations behind. Juniper, cedarwood and star anise dominate initially, complemented by cinnamon and spiced biscuit notes. Beneath these shimmer morello cherry, plum and sweet cherry, accompanied by dark chocolate and liquorice. With air contact, elderflower, coriander and fennel seed develop – a multi-layered, almost meditative aromatic profile.
Palate
Here the true class of this wine reveals itself: despite the opulent nose, it presents itself surprisingly silky and elegant. An active, precise acidity structure lends the fruit tension and drinkability, whilst the spice remains present without dominating. The texture is of remarkable finesse, the wine feels cool and controlled despite its fullness – a testament to the moderate alcohol content of just 12.5% and its biodynamic provenance.
Finish
Persistent and spicy with lingering spice notes and a fine cherry fruit, carried by the vibrant acidity.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the vineyard sites Braun and Stocknarrn in Gumpoldskirchen (240-270m altitude) on lime-rich sedimentary soil with calcareous gravel. The 2020 vintage benefited from ideal conditions: after a dry start, regular rainfall from May onwards provided optimal water supply without heat stress – perfect for biodynamic viticulture.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Noir from 12-15 year old vines, extremely low yield of just 25 hl/ha. Hand-harvested in small crates, whole-bunch fermentation with stems, spontaneous fermentation at max. 29°C. Aged for twelve months in 300l oak barrels, a further six months in large casks. Bottled unfiltered in August 2022.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Braised pork cheeks with celeriac purée, rosy roasted duck breast with orange sauce and fennel, or vegetarian with a beetroot gratin with feta, walnuts and harissa.
Special Characteristics
An unconventional, characterful Pinot Noir that impressively embodies Loimer’s biodynamic philosophy. The combination of spicy complexity and silky elegance makes it a distinctive statement from Gumpoldskirchen.
