Wine Description for Langhe Nebbiolo Nebbiolo DOC 2023 by Sottimano

Character
A classic introduction to the universe of Nebbiolo – more accessible and earlier drinking than a Barolo or Barbaresco, yet by no means lacking in depth. Sottimano, one of the most renowned estates in the Langhe, understands how to preserve the unmistakable spirit of the variety even in this „smaller“ category: structured, aromatically complex and characterised by vibrant acidity. At 14.5% vol., the wine displays the ripeness and warmth of the 2023 vintage without losing its elegance.
Terroir & Origin
The Langhe, the heartland of Piedmontese winemaking, provides the foundation for this DOC: rolling vineyard sites, interspersed with calcareous marl soils (Tufo and Helvezia), which give Nebbiolo its characteristic minerality and freshness. The 2023 vintage in Piedmont was marked by warmth and dryness, which favoured ripe tannins and expressive fruit – a challenge that experienced winemakers like Sottimano meet with precise hand-harvesting and careful cellar work.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s most demanding and characterful grape varieties – thin-skinned, tannic-rich, with high acidity and a distinctive aromatic spectrum. Sottimano, known for its respectful, terroir-focused approach, relies on careful vinification that puts the characteristics of the origin centre stage. The Langhe Nebbiolo typically matures for a shorter period than its great siblings Barolo and Barbaresco, which gives it a fresh, vibrant texture without sacrificing the variety-specific structure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to the Piedmontese table. Excellent with Tajarin al ragù, the delicate egg pasta with meat sauce, or with Vitello tonnato. Equally recommended with grilled lamb cutlets, Risotto ai funghi porcini or a mature Toma Piemontese. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal match for hearty, rich dishes of northern Italian cuisine.
