Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Castiglione 2020 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with rusty reflections and a lightened rim – classic for a young Nebbiolo that already hints at its characteristic garnet maturity.
- Nose
- This Castiglione presents itself with restrained elegance, displaying wild strawberries, sour cherry and barberry. The fruit emerges in measured doses, enveloped by green walnut and roasted hazelnut. Beneath unfold classic Nebbiolo notes: damp forest floor, undergrowth, moss. Black pepper, juniper and abundant sage lend savoury complexity. The iron-laden, almost bloody minerality whets the appetite.
- Palate
- Here emerges the philosophy of the Vietti house: an accessible, yet by no means simple Barolo. Fruit and spice hold each other in balance, whilst a gripping acidity provides structure and length. The prominent tannin framework feels firmly established, with bitter compounds binding the fruit aromas perfectly. Despite its power, the wine displays a silky mouthfeel – meaty and bloody at once, with that piquant herbal spice that distinguishes great Barolos.
- Finish
- Long and persistent, with returning forest and herbal aromas. The tannins remain present without dominating – a wine with many years ahead of it.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Castiglione is Vietti’s multi-cru interpretation of a classic Barolo. Grapes from various outstanding individual vineyard sites across the entire Barolo region on calcareous marl soils unite to create a wine that reflects the diversity of the appellation – without claiming the individuality of a single vineyard site.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo from vines between 10 and 45 years old, trained in the Guyot system with approximately 4,500 vines per hectare. The 2020 vintage produced concentrated yet fresh wines – this Castiglione combines modern accessibility with classic Barolo structure.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Braised venison shoulder with savoy cabbage, Brasato al Barolo, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, but also surprisingly good with oyster mushroom tacos or braised aubergines with Mediterranean herbs – the wine’s spice works equally well with vegetarian cuisine of depth.
- Special Features
- An ideal entry wine into the complex world of Vietti Barolos, offering drinking pleasure already now, yet capable of ageing effortlessly for a decade. Represents the modern, yet respectful style of this venerable house.
